My Arrogant Cousin Forced Me to Eat Dinner in a Bathroom at a Town Gala — So I Cancelled Her Son's $4,500 Allowance and Evicted Them Both
The next morning, the Pine Ridge Diner hummed with the clatter of plates and the low murmur of town gossip. I sat in a booth by the window, nursing a lukewarm coffee, trying to ignore the stares I still felt from the party the night before.
Just as I took a sip, a shadow fell over my table.
A county deputy, Officer Miller, stood there, his uniform crisp. He didn’t offer a greeting, just a stern look.
“Ms. Albright?” he asked, his voice flat.
I nodded, my hand still on my coffee mug.
He slid a thick stack of papers across the Formica tabletop. “This is for you. Emergency injunction. Filed this morning.”
My eyes scanned the first page. *Beatrice Albright vs. Eleanor Albright*. The claim: “Theft of family heirlooms, including but not limited to, $15,000 worth of antique silver from the Albright Manor, property of the Albright Family Trust.”
I felt a small prickle of annoyance. Beatrice was already escalating.
From the booth behind me, a man cleared his throat. I hadn’t noticed him before. He had a shock of white hair and bright, inquisitive eyes behind thick glasses.
“Pardon me,” he said, leaning slightly into my space. “But I couldn’t help but overhear. That law firm listed on your papers, ‘Sterling & Associates’?”
I looked at the paperwork again. Yes, that was it.
“That firm,” the man continued, his voice calm, “was officially dissolved three years ago. For repeated instances of document forgery, as I recall.”
I turned, a genuine surprise crossing my face. He met my gaze with an almost academic intensity.
Before I could ask anything more, my phone buzzed with an incoming call. It was Julian.
“Eleanor! What did you do?” His voice was high-pitched, frantic. “My corporate card just got declined at the First National Bank! In front of everyone! How could you?”
I held the phone a little away from my ear, feeling a strange mix of satisfaction and pity. The first ripple effect was already hitting.
