The St. Jude convent stood like a fortress of faith amidst the vibrant chaos of the city, its red brick walls and stained-glass windows a stark contrast to the peeling stucco of the surrounding homes. The heavy wooden doors, adorned with a simple iron cross, seemed to hold back not just the sounds of New Orleans, but also the relentless march of time.

A young nun, her habit crisp and her smile gentle, led me through a quiet courtyard blooming with jasmine, its fragrance cloying in the humid air. The hushed reverence of the place was palpable, a sanctuary of peace after the unsettling discoveries in the mansion.

“Sister Beatrice,” she said softly, pointing to an elderly nun seated on a bench, tending a small herb garden. Her back was to us, hunched over a rosemary bush.

Sister Beatrice, when she turned, had eyes that were ancient and world-weary, yet held a spark of unwavering resolve. Her face was a roadmap of wrinkles, each line a testament to a life lived in service. She wore a simple grey habit, practical and unadorned.

“Sister,” I began, my voice a little rough. “My name is Gabriel Vance. I believe you knew my mother, Genevieve.”

Her eyes, which had been inspecting a rosemary sprig, snapped to mine. A flicker of recognition, then apprehension, crossed her face. She slowly straightened, a slight wince betraying an old ache.

“Gabriel,” she said, her voice a reedy whisper. “You’ve grown so much. I remember you as a boy, running through the orphanage halls.”

I pulled out the faded letter from the tin box, handing it to her. “I found this. It mentions your name, and a forgery.”

She took the letter, her fingers, gnarled with age, tracing the familiar handwriting. Her gaze lingered on the words, and a deep sigh escaped her lips. The jasmine scent suddenly seemed too sweet, too heavy.

“Twenty-five years,” she murmured, more to herself than to me. “I thought that secret would go with me to the grave.”

“Julian Finch,” I stated, watching her closely. “He forced you to sign false guardianship papers, didn’t he? To steal my mother’s estate.”

Her shoulders slumped. She looked up at me, her eyes filled with a pain that transcended years. “He did. He was the director, powerful. He threatened to shut down the orphanage, to leave all those children homeless if I didn’t comply.”

My stomach clenched. The casual cruelty of Julian’s manipulation, using vulnerable children as leverage, was horrifying.

I reached into my pocket, pulling out my phone. “Sister, would you be willing to say this again? On a recording?”

Her gaze met mine, unwavering. “It is time for the truth to come out, child. For Genevieve, and for justice.”

I hit record. The small red light glowed, a silent witness in itself.

“My name is Sister Beatrice,” she began, her voice gaining strength, shedding the reedy quality. “On November 12th, 1998, Julian Finch, then director of St. Jude’s Orphanage, coerced me into signing documents falsely assigning him guardianship over Gabriel Vance. He presented fraudulent trust deeds, claiming Genevieve Vance was unstable and unfit.”

She paused, taking a deep, shuddering breath. “He threatened the orphanage’s closure, leaving dozens of children without a home, if I did not sign. I believed I had no choice. I witnessed him forge Genevieve Vance’s signature on additional estate transfer documents, which ultimately allowed him to seize her entire $14 million inheritance.”

The words, spoken aloud after so many years of silence, hung in the air, heavy and irrefutable. The recording clicked off.

Sister Beatrice reached out, her frail hand covering mine. “The Lord forgives my weakness, Gabriel. But I pray He grants you the strength to right this wrong.”

The weight of Julian’s deception, of his callous disregard for human lives, felt immense. But now, I held the key: a credible witness, an audio recording, and the forged documents. The pieces were finally in place. This wasn’t just a personal quest anymore; it was a matter of law.
