Chapter 5: The Unannounced Deposit

#content-1

The aroma of roasted chicken filled Maya’s apartment as she walked through the door. Julian sat at the dining table, a hot dinner spread out before him, a small, hopeful smile playing on his lips.

“Hey,” he said, pushing a plate towards her. “Long day?”

Maya nodded, her eyes scanning the table. The careful arrangement of food, the flickering candle – it was a scene designed for comfort, for peace.

“I called the bank again today,” Julian said, his voice light. He picked up his phone, navigating to her banking app.

“And guess what?” He showed her the screen. “They found a glitch. A small ‘processing error.’ Look.”

The balance showed $2,120. Two thousand dollars had reappeared.

Julian’s thumb scrolled over the transaction history, highlighting a new entry: “Deposit – Error Correction.”

“See?” he said, his smile widening. “I told you it had to be a system error. It’s not the whole amount, but it’s a start. They said it might take a few days for the rest to clear.”

He reached for her hand, his grip warm and reassuring. “You’ve been so stressed, sweetheart. This whole thing was just a big misunderstanding. You should really drop this investigation, get some rest.”

Maya looked at the $2,000 entry. It wasn’t a bank error correction. The number was too neat, too specific.

She knew Julian’s apprentice mechanic wages. She knew he had just received his bi-weekly paycheck.

The $2,000 was a cash advance he had taken from his own earnings. It was a calculated, deliberate move.

He wasn’t confessing. He was buying time. He was buying her silence.

The chicken on her plate suddenly tasted like ash.
