The grand parlor buzzed with festive chatter. Marcus, impeccably dressed, stood before the fireplace, a glass of champagne held aloft. He tapped it with a spoon, calling for silence.

“Friends, family,” Marcus began, his voice booming with practiced warmth. “Tonight, we celebrate my wonderful mother, Eleanor, on her 69th birthday.”

He smiled, a perfect, gleaming white smile that now seemed utterly grotesque. He raised his glass higher, ready to deliver his carefully crafted tribute.

Just as he opened his mouth, the giant projection screen at the far end of the parlor flickered. It was intended for a slideshow of old family photos, a nostalgic touch.

Instead, the screen blazed with the grainy, but undeniably clear, footage from Toby’s toy camera. The kitchen pantry, illuminated starkly.

A collective gasp rippled through the sixty assembled guests. Marcus froze, his glass still raised, his smile faltering.

Chloe, standing beside him, her face a picture of serene elegance moments before, now drained of all color. Her eyes widened, fixed on the screen.

The video played on, oblivious. We saw her, in unmistakable high-definition detail, meticulously replacing my genuine blood pressure pills with sugar capsules. The small baggie, the empty gelatin shells, her focused, calculating expression.

The audio, distorted but present, captured the faint rustle of plastic and the slight click of the pill bottle.

Then, something else appeared on the screen.

Behind Chloe, a tall, dark spectral shadow materialized. It stood motionless, overlooking her shoulder as she tampered with the bottle. Its form was indistinct, yet the outline, the height, the way it seemed to lean forward, was chillingly familiar.

It was Arthur. My late husband. The very image of the spectral presence I had seen in my dizzying hallucinations.

The shadow did not move, did not interact, but simply watched, a silent, horrifying witness to the crime unfolding. The room fell into a stunned silence. No one moved. No one spoke. The only sound was the faint hum of the projector and Chloe’s hushed, methodical actions on screen.

Marcus’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the polished marble floor. He did not seem to notice. His eyes darted from the screen, where his wife’s treachery and a spectral guardian were laid bare, to me.

His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated panic. Chloe, beside him, pressed a hand to her mouth, a small, choked sound escaping her lips.

The video paused, frozen on the image of Chloe inserting another fake capsule, with Arthur’s shadowy form looming behind her. The silence in the parlor was deafening.

This was no hallucination. This was irrefutable, digital evidence. And it carried a chilling, supernatural endorsement.
