Widowed Matriarch Eleanor Battles Her Greedy Son Marcus and Daughter-In-Law Over a $4.5 Million Inheritance as an 8-Year-Old Boy Exposes Their Lethal Drug Swap Before the Law
My gaze met Dr. Ward’s. The question in his eyes was clear: what next? There was only one answer. I nodded, a tight, firm movement of my head.
He picked up his phone, his thumb moving to dial. Just then, the grand front doors of Abernathy Hall swung open.
Detective Samuel Vance, a man whose stern face I knew from Arthur’s funeral, stepped into the parlor. Two uniformed officers followed close behind him, their presence immediately shifting the atmosphere from shocked outrage to grim authority.
The clinking of their gear was the only sound in the cavernous room.
Detective Vance’s eyes swept over the silent, stunned guests. He saw the projection screen, still displaying Chloe’s image with the spectral shadow, and then his gaze landed on Marcus and Chloe.
He walked directly toward them, his steps firm and unyielding.
“Marcus Abernathy, Chloe Abernathy,” Detective Vance announced, his voice carrying the weight of the law. “You are under arrest.”
Chloe let out a choked cry. Marcus’s face, already pale, turned a sickly shade of green.
The uniformed officers moved in. One took Marcus’s arm, the other Chloe’s. They produced handcuffs, cold steel glinting in the light.
The scene unfolded right beside my elaborate birthday cake, its tiers decorated with frosting roses. A small, frosted “69” seemed to mock the unfolding drama.
“On what grounds?” Marcus blustered, trying to pull his arm free. His voice was laced with a desperate defiance, but it cracked.
Detective Vance looked him squarely in the eye.
“On the grounds of attempted murder, elder abuse, and medical fraud,” he recited, his voice devoid of emotion. “Formal state warrants have been issued based on sworn testimony, documented medical evidence, and digital video footage.”
He gestured to the projector screen, still displaying the incriminating image.
“Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law,” an officer stated as the cuffs clicked shut around Marcus’s wrists.
Marcus struggled for a moment, then slumped, his shoulders defeated. Chloe was openly weeping, her elegant evening gown rumpled as she was led away.
Guests parted, creating a path for the officers and their handcuffed prisoners. Toby, wide-eyed, watched from behind Dr. Ward, a small tear tracking down his cheek.
The parlor, just minutes before a scene of festive celebration, was now a tableau of law and consequences. My son and daughter-in-law, their ambitions laid bare, were being led away in disgrace.
