The retrieved data was irrefutable, a digital fortress against Arthur’s lies. Elias Vance confirmed its integrity, praising Camilla’s ingenuity. Now, we had the undeniable truth. But Arthur’s web of deceit was complex, involving more than just fabricated reports. We needed to unravel the human element, expose the enablers. And for that, I knew I had to confront Robert.

I arranged a meeting at a neutral location – a private dining room in a high-end restaurant, far from the prying eyes of the corporate world. Robert arrived, looking disheveled, his eyes red-rimmed. He clearly hadn’t slept, a stark contrast to his usual polished appearance. He tried to project an air of injured innocence, but his nervousness was palpable.

“Elara,” he began, his voice a low plea, “I know you’re upset. My father… he can be very difficult. But we can still fix this, for the baby, for our family.”

I cut him off, my voice calm, devoid of any emotion. “This isn’t about fixing anything, Robert. This is about truth. About your complicity.”

I placed my tablet on the polished table between us. Its screen glowed, displaying the pristine, timestamped deed to the commercial penthouse, alongside the legitimate loan documents. Then, with a swipe, I brought up Malcolm’s falsified reports, highlighting the discrepancies in stark red.

“This is the real deed,” I stated, my gaze unwavering. “And these are the real numbers. What Malcolm presented to the board was a lie. A very calculated, very damaging lie.”

Robert’s face paled as he stared at the screen. He tried to look away, but couldn’t. His bravado crumbled.

“He made Malcolm do it,” Robert mumbled, his voice barely audible. “My father… he can be very persuasive.”

“Persuasive enough for you to go along with it?” I asked, my voice still even, but a steel thread ran beneath it. “Persuasive enough to betray your wife and the mother of your child? To watch him physically assault me?”

He flinched. “No! I never… I just thought… he said it was to protect the family’s legacy. He said you were being reckless with your investments, that your past… your background… wasn’t stable enough for the scale of our family’s wealth.”

“My ‘background’ is what built Hayes & Associates from nothing, Robert,” I retorted, a sharp edge entering my tone. “And it’s what will save it from your father’s greed. Now, tell me everything. How did he intend to actually ‘claim’ ownership of my assets, when I held all the legal deeds?”

Robert swallowed hard, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape.

“He… he had a plan to create a new paper trail,” he stammered, his words rushing out now. “He found an old notary, Brenda Shaw. He made her re-attest dormant company deeds, documents that were years, decades old. He said they could be re-filed, backdated, and then used to prove Hayes & Associates was secretly a subsidiary of Finley & Finch, or that key assets were transferred.”

A new wave of cold fury washed over me. Re-attesting old, dormant deeds? It was audacious, a desperate gamble by a man cornered by his own failing empire. Brenda Shaw. Another pawn in Arthur’s game.

“Brenda Shaw,” I repeated, letting the name hang in the air. “Where can I find her?”

Robert’s eyes widened, a fresh wave of panic gripping him. “No, Elara, you can’t! He threatened her! He said he’d ruin her family, her business, everything if she didn’t cooperate. He’s ruthless, Elara. He’ll stop at nothing.”

“He already has,” I said, my voice dangerously low. “He already put a burning cigar on my arm, destroyed my company’s records, and used you to try and steal my life’s work. There’s nothing left to lose, Robert. Give me her address.”

He hesitated, then, his shoulders slumped in defeat, he reached for a napkin and scribbled an address. His hand trembled as he pushed it across the table.

“He made her do it,” Robert repeated, his voice barely a whisper, a desperate attempt at absolution. “He said he’d ruin her family, just like he said he’d ruin yours if you didn’t comply.”

I picked up the napkin, my gaze hard. The address was for a small town on the outskirts of the city. Brenda Shaw, a notary public, a figure of trust, coerced into committing fraud. Another testament to the insidious reach of Arthur’s power and desperation.

There was no turning back now. This wasn’t just about proving my innocence. This was about exposing a criminal conspiracy, unraveling a legacy built on deceit, and ensuring justice for every life Arthur Finch had tried to crush in his relentless pursuit of control. Brenda Shaw was the next piece of the puzzle, and I would make sure her story, and Arthur’s, would be heard.
