Pregnant CEO Attacked by Father-in-Law at Gala: My "Family" Tried to Ruin My Career and Take My Company
The silence in the ballroom didn’t last long. As Arthur’s figure disappeared, a cacophony erupted—investors clamoring, journalists rushing forward, Elias and Camilla quickly forming a shield around me. The story of the Finch family’s corporate fraud, the physical assault, and the elaborate scheme to seize Hayes & Associates exploded across every financial news outlet within hours.
My phone rang incessantly with calls from grateful clients and frantic reporters. On a large monitor in Elias’s conference room, where we’d retreated, the news played on a loop.
Headline after headline flashed by: “Finley & Finch Implicated in Massive Corporate Fraud,” “Real Estate Titan Arthur Finch Under Investigation,” “Pregnant CEO Exposes Husband’s Complicity in Family Scheme.” The once-unimpeachable reputation of the Finch family was obliterated, their legacy reduced to a scandal.
Elias took a call from Detective Anya Sharma of the NYPD financial crimes unit. He muted the phone, looking at me.
“Detective Sharma confirms that Arthur has been formally detained for questioning,” Elias reported, his expression grim. “The IRS audit is now a full-blown criminal investigation. Finley & Finch is facing an immediate collapse; major investors are pulling out en masse. It’s over for him.”
A hollow victory, I thought. The destruction of one family’s name, even one so deserving, brought little joy.
Camilla, meanwhile, was diligently fielding calls from my own company, her face a mixture of relief and exhaustion. She held up a finger, then nodded into the phone.
“Elara,” she said, hanging up. “Robert Finch was officially dismissed from Finley & Finch this afternoon. Effective immediately, with cause.”
I nodded. It was expected. But I had one more piece of business to attend to. I reached into my bag and pulled out a thick envelope, sliding it across the table to Elias.
“These are the divorce papers,” I stated, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. “Serve them to Robert Finch. Today.”
Elias picked up the envelope, his gaze understanding. “It will be done. And the police complaint for his complicity in the fraud?”
“Filed concurrently,” I confirmed. “I want him to face the full consequences of his actions.”
Later that afternoon, a text message pinged on my phone. It was from Detective Sharma, sent to Elias and then forwarded to me.
*“Malcolm Thorne and Brenda Shaw have both been taken in for questioning. Thorne is cooperating, detailing Arthur Finch’s coercion. Shaw is terrified but also providing a statement regarding the re-attested deeds. Legal repercussions for both will be severe.”*
The final pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, but the picture they formed was not one of triumph. It was a tableau of ruin. Arthur, stripped of his power and wealth, facing criminal charges. Robert, disgraced, disinherited, and now divorcing. Malcolm and Brenda, their lives destroyed by their choices and Arthur’s threats. And my family, what little remained of it, shattered beyond repair.
Camilla brought me a glass of water. “You did it, Elara,” she said softly, her eyes full of admiration. “You stood up to them.”
I nodded, taking a sip. “I did. But the cost…”
The physical burn on my arm still throbbed faintly, a reminder of the initial, public humiliation. But the deeper wounds were internal, scars on my heart from a betrayal I never imagined possible. The fight for my company was won, but the fight for my peace, for my sense of family, felt like it had only just begun. The echoes of the aftermath would linger for a very long time.
