The thought of Elena was a persistent ache, tangled with the image of the young girl, Mia. I needed to see her, to understand. But confronting her directly, especially with Mark around, was too dangerous. I knew Elena’s habits from our past. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she went to St. Monica’s for afternoon prayers.

I waited across the street from the old church, tucked away behind a parked delivery truck, watching the parishioners trickle in. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows, dappling the stoops with light. It felt surreal, being back in this neighborhood, a phantom observing the life that had moved on without me.

Elena arrived right on time, her dark hair pulled back, a simple black dress clinging to her slender frame. She looked older, lines of worry etched around her eyes, but still carried herself with that quiet grace I remembered. Mia was not with her.

I waited until she was inside, then slipped in through a side door. The air inside the church was cool, hushed, filled with the faint scent of incense and old wood. A few elderly women knelt in the pews, their lips moving silently. Elena was in our old spot, three rows back, near a stained-glass window depicting St. Michael.

I approached slowly, my footsteps muffled by the carpet. She didn’t look up until I was right beside her pew.

Her head snapped around. Her eyes, usually so warm, widened in sheer terror. A small gasp escaped her lips, quickly stifled.

“Julian,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, like a prayer of dread.

I knelt beside her. “We need to talk. I have proof. My mother—”

“Shh,” she cut me off, her eyes darting around the near-empty church. “Not here. Not like this.”

“They told me you died,” she said, tears welling in her eyes, catching the faint light from the window. “A hotel room, an overdose. Mark found you. He was devastated. We all were.”

Her shoulders began to shake. “I thought you were gone forever.”

“It was a lie, Elena. All of it.” I reached for her hand, but she recoiled slightly, fear still etched on her face.

“I didn’t know,” she insisted, her voice breaking. “I swear. I would never have—” She stopped, her gaze dropping to her folded hands.

“Mia,” I prompted gently. “Who is she, Elena?”

Her body stiffened. She looked up, her eyes glistening. “She’s Mark’s daughter,” she said quickly, too quickly.

“Is she?” I pressed. “Or is she mine?”

Her face crumpled. A sob escaped her, silent but wrenching. “She was born seven months after you disappeared, Julian. Seven months.”

My heart stopped. Seven months. We had been together, deeply in love, in the days leading up to August 14, 2012. It fit.

“She’s yours, Julian,” Elena confessed, her voice thick with anguish. “Mia is your daughter.”

The words hit me with the force of a physical blow. A daughter. My daughter. My life hadn’t just been stolen; it had been secretly continued, a hidden legacy.

“Mark,” I choked out. “Does he know?”

Elena shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “No. He believes she’s his. I had to protect her. He… he wouldn’t have understood. He hates you, Julian. He always has.”

She dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. “I’m trapped, Julian. Mark, Teresa… they control everything. Mia’s future. My life.”

I looked at the stained-glass window, the serene face of St. Michael. My daughter. A secret kept for eleven years. Another layer of betrayal, another reason to fight. But how could I reveal myself without shattering Mia’s world, without putting her in even greater danger?
