Chapter 12: TRUE ENDING

A profound silence descended upon the auditorium, heavy and stifling. Marcus, his face now pale, took a small, involuntary step back from the podium. His eyes darted toward the screen, then to the senior Aegis Horizon executives seated in the front row, whose expressions had shifted from anticipation to a shared, bewildered unease.

Arthur Holloway cleared his throat, the sound amplified and echoing through the vast space. He didn’t look at Marcus. He looked at the audience, his gaze sweeping across the faces of hundreds of defense contractors and investors, all of them suddenly leaning forward, rapt.

He opened the dossier. The rustle of paper was surprisingly loud.

“My office has just received compelling documentation,” Holloway began, his voice calm, measured, “regarding the proprietary nature of the technology Aegis Horizon intended to showcase today.”

He paused, letting the words hang in the air. Marcus tried to interject, a strangled “What is this?” escaping his lips, but Holloway ignored him completely.

“Specifically,” Holloway continued, “we have been presented with a globally recognized, priority patent registration, under the reference T2-KCAID-BIOCHEM-2024-001, for a molecular matrix atmospheric water purification system.”

A low murmur started in the crowd. The mention of a “priority patent” in such a context was a red flag the size of Texas.

“This patent,” Holloway pressed on, his voice gaining a sharper edge, “was officially registered and secured seventy-two hours ago, establishing irrefutable intellectual property rights for a Tier-2 advanced synthesis algorithm.”

He looked directly at the Aegis Horizon executives, who now sat rigid, their faces a mixture of confusion and growing alarm.

“The specifications of this Tier-2 patent,” Holloway stated, his voice now ringing with authority, “render any preceding, less evolved versions of the same core technology—such as the Tier-1 variant Aegis Horizon has been preparing—as an illegal, non-viable clone under international commercial law.”

The murmurs swelled into a confused roar. People began whispering, looking at their neighbors, then back at Marcus, who stood frozen, his jaw slack.

“Furthermore,” Holloway added, raising his voice to cut through the rising commotion, “we have evidence of a documented transfer of funds and preliminary intellectual property disclosure, amounting to a sum of four hundred thousand US dollars, from Dr. Elena Kincaid’s private research funds into Aegis Horizon’s accounts, facilitated by Mr. Marcus Kincaid, the presenter, for what appears to be an unauthorized acquisition of said Tier-1 technology.”

The words hit like a physical shockwave. A gasp went through the audience. Marcus visibly flinched. The Aegis Horizon executives were now on their feet, shouting questions, their faces contorted with fury.

“This constitutes an immediate breach of SEC compliance,” Holloway declared, his voice cutting through the chaos like a knife. “And, given the priority patent, an immediate voidance of all existing and pending contractual agreements related to this specific technology for Aegis Horizon.”

He didn’t need to say more. The implications were clear: Aegis Horizon’s multi-million dollar venture had just been rendered worthless. Their stock was about to plummet. Contracts worth billions were now null and void. The entire deal was sunk.

Marcus stood there, utterly exposed, his career, his ambition, his very future collapsing around him on a global stage. His eyes scanned the audience, searching, desperate, until they landed on me, sitting quietly in the back. A look of pure, unadulterated hatred, mixed with terrified understanding, flashed in his gaze.

I met his stare for a long moment, a ghost in the crowd, then slowly, deliberately, I rose from my seat. It was time to disappear.
