Chapter 12: The Next Morning at the Old Shed

The doorbell chimed a hesitant melody through the house the next afternoon. I found Chloe Albright, Julian’s ex-fiancée, standing on my porch, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen.

She clutched a worn leather portfolio to her chest, her knuckles white.

“Eleanor,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I’m so sorry. I should have come forward sooner.”

I stepped aside, ushering her into the grand foyer, its usual cheerful light feeling muted by the tension she carried. Max, usually boisterous with visitors, merely watched her with a serious gaze.

Chloe sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, refusing the tea I offered. Her gaze darted around the familiar room, a place she had once considered her future home.

“Julian… he changed,” she started, twisting a ring on her finger. “After the engagement broke off, he got really close with Douglas Finch.”

I nodded, remembering the appraiser’s name from Julian’s legal documents. “Finch is behind the conservatorship papers.”

A fresh wave of tears welled in Chloe’s eyes. “He’s been poisoning Julian for months. Telling him you and Thomas were cutting him out, that the company was going under, that you were incompetent.”

She fumbled with the portfolio, her hands shaking as she unzipped it. Inside were stacks of printed emails and bank statements.

“I found these after we broke up,” she confessed, pushing the papers across the coffee table. “Julian was so careful, but I had access to his cloud drive for wedding plans.”

My fingers trembled as I picked up the first printout. It was an email chain between Julian and Finch. Finch was clearly coaching Julian, advising him on how to “assert control” over the Delaney estate.

“Finch told Julian you were secretly selling off parts of the land,” Chloe explained, her voice barely a whisper. “He even suggested Julian ‘secure’ some original property deeds before they ‘vanished.’”

My heart pounded. Selling off land? It was a blatant lie, designed to fuel Julian’s insecurities and greed.

Another email referenced a specific document: “The 1998 deed for the north meadow parcel. Make sure you get your hands on that one, Julian. It’s key.”

“He told Julian you were keeping crucial documents from him,” Chloe added, confirming my fears. “He kept pushing Julian to find them, to ‘protect his inheritance.'”

I looked at the forged appraisal, then back at Chloe, her face etched with genuine remorse. She had been trapped, caught between Julian’s manipulation and Finch’s insidious influence.

But her remorse had finally brought a crucial piece of the puzzle. The mention of the 1998 deed, specifically.

I knew exactly where to start looking.
