David Harrison’s voice oozed confidence through the speakerphone in Sarah Chen’s office. His tone was dismissive, almost jovial, as if he were discussing a minor inconvenience rather than my entire financial future. Sarah had put him on speaker so I could hear every smug word.

“Look, Sarah,” Harrison drawled, “Ethan is a reasonable man. He’s willing to offer a generous settlement, considering. A clean break. Eleanor gets the apartment, a modest lump sum, and we part ways. No drawn-out mess. No more public drama.”

He paused, clearly expecting Sarah to jump at the offer. His casual tone, so confident in their upper hand, was a deliberate personal insult. He assumed I was desperate.

“Generous?” Sarah’s voice was sharp, cutting through his pretense. “David, your client has frozen my client’s assets, publicly slandered her, and is actively trying to strip her of any equitable division. That is not ‘generous.’ That’s extortion.”

Harrison chuckled, a dry, grating sound. “Come on, Sarah. Your client is on crutches, emotionally unstable from what Ethan tells me, and clearly trying to liquidate assets. We have the emergency freeze in place. This isn’t a strong position for her. Frankly, Eleanor is lucky Ethan is even offering this much.”

He laid out their demands, each one designed to diminish my worth, to leave me financially vulnerable and without any say in the future of Phoenix Innovations. He proposed I relinquish my Chairwoman title. He suggested a timeline that would force a rapid, unfavorable decision, knowing I was still recovering.

“She can keep her personal effects, of course,” Harrison added, his voice dripping with condescension. “And a small car. We’re not barbarians.”

A small car. The casual dismissal of my professional standing, the reduction of my life to “personal effects” and a “small car,” was a deliberate jab. It was a petty, personal cruelty, meant to strip me of dignity, not just assets. It mirrored Ethan’s dismissive attitude toward my injury.

“This offer is insulting, David,” I interjected, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. “I am not ’emotionally unstable,’ and I am certainly not ‘lucky’ to receive a fraction of what I’m entitled to.”

Harrison’s cheerful demeanor evaporated slightly. “Eleanor, it’s best if you let your attorney handle this. We’re trying to be amicable here.”

“Amicable?” I scoffed. “Your client threatened to strip me of every asset three hours after I fractured my leg in three places. He then launched a public smear campaign designed to destroy my reputation. Amicable is a word he clearly doesn’t understand.”

“You filed for divorce, Eleanor,” Harrison snapped, his tone hardening. “Actions have consequences. Ethan is merely protecting his interests.”

“And so am I,” I replied, my voice dangerously low. “My interests, and the interests of Phoenix Innovations.”

There was a brief, pregnant silence on the line. Harrison didn’t comment on the mention of Phoenix, probably dismissing it as a weak attempt to assert corporate relevance. He was too focused on the immediate, on what he perceived as his unassailable position.

“We have prepared the necessary documents for a quick, favorable settlement for Ethan,” Harrison resumed, regaining his composure. “If Eleanor doesn’t agree to these terms within forty-eight hours, we will move forward with a full-scale legal battle. One, I assure you, she is not prepared for, either financially or emotionally.”

It was a clear threat, an attempt to intimidate me into submission. He was banking on my physical vulnerability, on the emotional exhaustion from the smear campaign, and on my supposed lack of resources. He had no idea what Sarah and I now held.

“We will review your proposal, David,” Sarah said calmly, her voice belying the storm brewing beneath the surface. “And we will respond in due course.”

“Just make sure Eleanor understands the gravity of her situation, Sarah,” Harrison said, his smugness returning. “She’s playing a dangerous game. And she’s holding a very weak hand.”

He hung up, the click of the phone echoing in the quiet office. Sarah looked at me, a fierce determination in her eyes.

“He thinks he has us cornered,” she said, her voice tight with suppressed anger. “He thinks your injury makes you weak. He thinks he can bully us into submission.”

“He always has,” I replied, a cold resolve settling over me. “He always assumes everyone else is weaker, less intelligent, less capable. He always assumes he can control the narrative.”

“Well, we’re about to give him a very rude awakening,” Sarah declared, pushing a stack of legal pads towards me. “Are you ready, Eleanor? Because this is where we turn the tables.”

I nodded, feeling a surge of adrenaline, a precise, focused energy. My leg still ached, but the pain was distant, almost an afterthought. The sting of Harrison’s condescension, the memory of Ethan’s casual cruelty, fueled my resolve.

Ethan had tried to strip me of everything. He had reduced my worth to a “modest lump sum” and a “small car.” He had publicly humiliated me. He had even tried to take my father’s legacy by undermining my position as Chairwoman.

But he had made a critical miscalculation. He had underestimated not only my resilience but also my access. He had forgotten the ghost in the machine, the faded addendum that now sat safely in Sarah’s hands.

“I’m ready, Sarah,” I said, my voice firm. “Let’s show them what a ‘weak hand’ can really do.”
