The courtroom was packed. Richard sat at the plaintiff’s table, flanked by two sharp-suited lawyers. He wouldn’t meet my gaze, instead staring fixedly at the judge. His face was a tight mask of aggression and thinly veiled panic.

My pro bono attorney, Mr. Davies, was quiet but firm. He presented our emergency motion to block Richard’s eviction and his fraudulent claims to the estate.

Richard’s lead lawyer, a woman with a severe bun and an even more severe stare, rose to address the judge. She spoke of Martha’s “delusions,” of an “elderly woman fabricating stories.” She dismissed my discovery of the letters as “the ramblings of a confused mind.”

“Your Honor, Mrs. Oakwood’s claims are baseless,” she declared, her voice echoing in the hushed room. “Mr. Halloway has presented legally notarized deeds and has been managing the estate for years in good faith, in the absence of the missing heir.”

Just as the judge began to review Richard’s presented documents, a rustle broke out in the back of the gallery. Douglas Finch, dressed in a crisp suit, rose to his feet.

“Your Honor,” Finch said, his voice cutting through the tension. “My name is Douglas Finch. I am an independent estate appraiser, and I was hired by Mr. Richard Halloway to assess the Oakwood estate.”

Richard’s lawyer shot a furious look at Finch, then at Richard. Richard’s face contorted in a mix of surprise and fury.

“I respectfully request to submit audited financial records to the court,” Finch continued, walking toward the bench with a thick binder in hand. “These records expose Mr. Halloway’s massive, unpaid tax liabilities dating back over a decade, as well as the fraudulent nature of the deeds he submitted, notarized by Jasper Croft.”

A gasp rippled through the gallery. The judge’s gavel hit the block.
