The courtroom erupted into a flurry of whispers and agitated murmurs after Finch’s revelation. Richard’s lawyers were on their feet, objecting vehemently, but the judge, a stern woman with an air of absolute authority, silenced them with a sharp look.

“Mr. Finch, these are serious allegations,” the judge stated, her voice steady. “Are you prepared to submit these documents as sworn testimony, knowing the professional consequences if they are false?”

“I am, Your Honor,” Finch replied, his gaze firm. “I have cross-referenced every detail. The fraud is undeniable.”

He then looked at me, giving a small, almost imperceptible nod. It was my cue.

Mr. Davies then stood. “Your Honor, in light of these new developments, we also wish to submit a crucial piece of evidence, directly related to the alleged ‘missing heir’ and Mr. Halloway’s claims of inheritance.”

He walked over to my table, and I handed him the two oilskin-wrapped letters. He presented them to the judge, who took them carefully.

“This is a two-part letter, Your Honor, found hidden in the personal effects of the mare, Copper, formerly owned by Clara Halloway,” Mr. Davies explained. “It is signed by the late Thomas Oakwood, Martha’s husband, and dated fifteen years ago, concurrent with Clara Halloway’s disappearance.”

The judge began to read. The courtroom fell utterly silent. Every eye was on her. Richard, pale and sweating, watched her face intensely.

She read aloud, her voice clear and resonant, from the first letter: “…a plan for Clara, away from Grandmother Halloway’s abusive nature, to protect her legacy…”

Then, from the second: “…I have personally arranged her relocation to Oregon, under a new identity, to ensure her safety. She is not missing, but freed.”

A collective gasp filled the air. Richard slumped in his chair, his face a mask of utter defeat. The judge looked up from the letters, her eyes fixed on Richard.

“Mr. Halloway,” she said, her voice chillingly calm. “Based on these sworn documents, your claim to Clara Halloway’s inheritance is completely void. It appears your entire premise for seizing the Oakwood estate is built on a series of elaborate fabrications and criminal forgery.”
