The silence in the community center stretched, thick and uncomfortable. Every eye was on Liem, waiting for his response. Uncle Duc’s gaze bore into him, direct and unblinking.
“Liem,” Uncle Duc said, his voice slow and deliberate, “my nephew. Have you been experiencing these… visions? These difficulties in driving your new car, as Kevin claims?”
Liem’s heart pounded against his ribs. The question hung in the air, a loaded trap. He thought of the blood-orange streetlights, the clapping figures, the odometer ticking backward. He remembered the unidentifiable copper wire beneath his dashboard.
If he told the truth, he would confirm every one of Kevin’s accusations. He would sound insane, exactly as Kevin wanted him to. They would see the proof of his “hallucinations.” Kevin would win.
But if he lied, he would keep the mystery of the Camry, and the strange road, entirely to himself. He would appear stable, perhaps. But the secret would fester. The car’s power remained unexplained. It was a choice between his sanity and the truth of what he had experienced.
He saw Kevin watching him, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing on his lips. This was the moment. The balance of his future, his reputation, perhaps even his sanity, hung on his next words.
