Call an ambulance right now, Marcus—my daughter’s water just broke on your mother’s marble floor! I screamed, kneeling over Maya as fluid flooded her silk dress.
News travels fast in hospitals, especially when money changes hands. After an emergency C-section, Maya delivered a healthy baby boy, but her recovery was slow. I longed to see my grandson, to hold Maya’s hand.
I approached Maya’s post-operative room, my heart aching with a mix of relief and trepidation. But two hulking figures in crisp security uniforms blocked the door.
“Visiting hours are over, ma’am,” one said, his voice flat.
“I’m Dr. Evelyn Washington, Maya Holloway’s mother. I need to see my daughter and my grandson,” I stated, trying to push past them gently.
The second guard placed a hand firmly on my shoulder. “Dr. Washington, your visitation clearance has been revoked. We have standing orders from the Holloway family, specifically Mrs. Beatrice Holloway, not to allow you access.”
My stomach clenched. “Beatrice? She’s bribed you, hasn’t she?”
The guard’s face remained impassive. “We’re simply following protocol, ma’am. You are to leave the premises immediately.”
“This is outrageous! My daughter just had a baby. She needs me!” I protested, trying to peer around them, hoping to catch a glimpse of Maya.
They began to escort me, one on each arm, down the hallway. My anger flared, but their grip was firm, unyielding.
“Please, just let me see her!” I pleaded, my voice cracking.
They ignored me, guiding me past the nursing station, past sympathetic but silent faces, all the way to the main entrance. The automatic doors slid open, depositing me onto the sidewalk outside. The bustling city seemed indifferent to my despair.
Later that evening, a text notification flashed on my phone. It was a voicemail. Maya.
Her voice was weak, slurred with medication. “Mom… please. Just… stop. Stop attacking Marcus. You’re… you’re making everything worse. Just leave us alone. Please.”
The words, laced with confusion and pain, twisted a knife in my gut. Beatrice hadn’t just locked me out; she had turned my own daughter against me, using Marcus’s manipulations as her weapon. I was truly isolated.
