Call an ambulance right now, Marcus—my daughter’s water just broke on your mother’s marble floor! I screamed, kneeling over Maya as fluid flooded her silk dress.
The air crackled with a new, sharper sound. Not the distant whir of a private jet, but the heavy thrum of rotors directly overhead, echoing through the sprawling vineyard. Marcus’s face, already flushed with anger, tightened further.
Then, the crash.
A splintering roar ripped through the estate, followed by the metallic screech of grinding hinges. The ornate oak door to the VIP restroom, where Maya lay groaning, buckled inward. Dust plumed into the air.
Two uniformed Fulton County officers stepped into the frame, followed by a man whose state ID badge glinted under the emergency lights. Harrison “Hank” Burke. He wore a no-nonsense expression, his gaze sweeping over me and Maya before locking onto Marcus and Beatrice.
“Dr. Evelyn Washington?” Hank’s voice was calm, cutting through Beatrice’s frantic whispers. “State Department of Public Health. Your emergency beacon was received.”
Beatrice, her silk gown rustling, pushed past Marcus. She held a crisp document, already signed. “Officer, there’s been a grave misunderstanding. My daughter-in-law, Maya, simply prefers a private, holistic birthing experience. She’s signed a full refusal-of-care for any institutional intervention.”
She extended the paper, her hand steady despite the chaos.
Hank didn’t even glance at it. He stepped closer to Maya, his eyes taking in her pale face and the growing crimson stain on her dress. He knelt, checking her pulse.
“This patient is exhibiting signs of severe medical distress, consistent with premature labor and potential hemorrhage,” Hank stated, rising to face Beatrice. “This document is invalid. Under emergency state protocol, I am invoking a mandatory airlift. She needs immediate trauma care.”
He nodded to the officers. “Secure the perimeter. Prepare for medical transport.”
Beatrice’s carefully constructed façade crumbled. Her mouth opened, but no words came out as the officers began clearing the small, opulent room. The helicopter’s blades whirred louder, an engine of imminent change descending on Marcus’s carefully controlled world.
