Chapter 12: Night Watch

Armed with Martha’s affidavit and the concrete details about Arthur Pendelton’s fraudulent notarizations, the momentum shifted. We immediately contacted Dr. Kincaid, relaying Martha’s testimony and the implication of a corrupt notary. Dr. Kincaid, in turn, escalated the information directly to the Child Protective Services investigator assigned to our case.

The phone rang two days later. It was a no-nonsense woman named Ms. Evans from CPS.

“Mr. Gable, Mrs. Gable, this is Ms. Evans. We’ve reviewed the additional information you provided, specifically the affidavit from Ms. Higgins and the concerning details regarding Mr. Pendelton.” Her voice was crisp, professional. “Combined with Dr. Kincaid’s medical report on Lily, we have sufficient grounds to open a formal investigation into Ms. Eleanor Gable’s household.”

Maya squeezed my hand, her eyes wide. This was it.

“What does that mean for us?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

“It means we are taking your concerns very seriously,” Ms. Evans replied. “Effective immediately, we are issuing a temporary protective order. Lily will remain in your full custody, Mr. and Mrs. Gable, under our strict supervision.”

A wave of relief, so potent it almost buckled my knees, washed over me. Lily was safe. For now.

“Eleanor Gable will be formally informed of the investigation,” Ms. Evans continued. “She will be required to cooperate, and we will be assessing her interactions with Lily, as well as the safety of the estate environment. We’ve also flagged the alleged notary fraud for law enforcement and the state’s professional licensing board.”

“So she can’t just take Lily?” Maya asked, a tremor of hope in her voice.

“Not without a judge’s order, and only if we present evidence of a genuine safety risk from your household,” Ms. Evans assured her. “And from what we have on file, that risk lies elsewhere. However, you will have regular check-ins with a case worker, and we will be monitoring your stability and Lily’s well-being closely.”

“What about Eleanor’s threats? Her cutting off my pay, the eviction?” I asked.

“Those are separate civil matters, though they factor into our assessment of Eleanor Gable’s behavior,” Ms. Evans stated. “For now, focus on providing a stable, safe environment for Lily. We’ve informed Eleanor Gable that any further attempts to isolate or interfere with your ability to care for Lily will be considered direct obstruction of our investigation and could have serious legal consequences.”

The call ended, leaving us in a stunned silence. It felt like walking out from under a crushing weight. We had been heard. We had been believed.

Then, my phone vibrated with a text message. It was from Eleanor.

*I just heard from CPS. This is not over. You will regret this, Leo. I’m filing an emergency appeal with my corporate attorneys. You have no idea what you’ve unleashed.*

The relief I felt moments ago evaporated, replaced by a cold knot in my stomach. Eleanor wouldn’t back down. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot. CPS had given us temporary protection, but Eleanor was playing a much longer, more dangerous game. Her corporate attorneys meant a fight with unlimited resources.

But we had something too. Not money, not influence, but a truth that could finally be wielded against her. I looked at Maya, then at Lily, sleeping peacefully in her bassinet. We had to prepare for the real battle. We had to face Eleanor directly.
