Chapter 12: Night Watch

The silence in Eleanor’s office stretched, thick with unspoken accusations and the weight of revelations. Her eyes, usually so imperious, darted from Martha’s affidavit to Dr. Kincaid’s report, then finally to me. The mask of her composure had slipped, revealing a raw, calculating fury underneath.

“You think this changes anything?” she sneered, her voice low and dangerous. “You think some disgruntled ex-employee and a biased doctor’s report are enough to threaten *me*?”

I leaned forward, meeting her gaze directly. “It’s enough to get the state licensing board to investigate Arthur Pendelton. It’s enough to bring the Bar Association down on him. And once they expose his fraud, every document he’s ever notarized for you—every property transfer, every corporate agreement—will be questioned. Your entire business empire could face a legal tsunami.”

Her jaw tightened, a visible tic working in her cheek. The threat to her business, her legacy, was something she couldn’t dismiss with a wave of her hand. She valued her reputation in the corporate world above all else.

“And CPS isn’t just investigating you for child endangerment, Eleanor,” I continued, pushing my advantage. “They’re now looking into a pattern of abuse, isolation, and psychological manipulation. Martha’s testimony about Charlotte proves this isn’t a one-off. It’s a systemic problem in your household.”

She gripped the edge of her mahogany desk, her knuckles white. She looked out the window, at the rolling green lawns of the estate, as if seeking solace in the vastness of her domain. But even that, I knew, felt like a prison now.

“What do you want, Leo?” she bit out, turning back to me, her eyes gleaming with cold resentment. “What is your price for this… silence?”

“Not silence,” I corrected her. “A truce. You drop the custody petition against us. You publicly retract the defamatory social media posts about Maya. You stop interfering with our lives, our housing, our employment. And you release my final paycheck, plus an additional sum for the time I’ve been off work dealing with this, two thousand dollars.”

Eleanor barked a short, humorless laugh. “$2,000? You think you can extort me?”

“It’s not extortion, Eleanor,” I said, my voice steady. “It’s compensation for the damage you’ve caused. And it’s a fraction of what your corporate lawyers will charge you to defend against a notary fraud investigation that could unravel decades of your business dealings. Or the reputational damage when it comes out that the revered Eleanor Gable is a repeat abuser of children in her care.”

Her face was a mask of internal conflict. She hated to concede, but the stakes were too high, the potential damage to her business too great. She had always been a pragmatist when it came to money and power.

“I will suspend the custody petition,” she finally said, her voice strained, each word seemingly costing her immense effort. “And I will issue a statement to the local media clarifying Maya’s well-being and withdrawing my earlier comments. Your paycheck will be released tomorrow. And the two thousand. But know this, Leo.”

She leaned forward, her eyes locking onto mine, cold and unyielding. “This is not over. This is a temporary suspension. A tactical retreat. If you or Maya ever speak of this—Charlotte, Pendelton, any of it—outside of a court-ordered deposition, I will unleash every resource I have. Your lives will be a living hell. You will never work in this town again. And I will find a way to take that baby.”

Her threat was chilling, a bitter pill to swallow. It wasn’t a victory, not a clean sweep. It was a cold war, a fragile peace bought at a terrible price.

“We just want to be left alone,” I said, my voice hoarse. “To raise our daughter in peace.”

She merely stared at me, her face hard. “Then make sure you are. And make sure your little ‘witness’ stays silent.”

I stood up, pushing back the armchair. The deal was done. An uneasy truce, a temporary reprieve. As I walked towards the door, I glanced back at Eleanor, still sitting at her desk, bathed in the last rays of the setting sun. She looked smaller, somehow, stripped of her unchallenged power. But her resolve, I knew, remained unbroken.
