Chapter 12: Night Watch

The fluorescent lights of the 24-hour urgent care clinic hummed, stark and unforgiving, cutting through the late-night quiet. Maya sat beside me in the waiting room, Lily cradled gently against her chest, her small form swaddled tightly. The air smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee. We had filled out forms, explained the ‘domestic disturbance’ vaguely to the receptionist, and now we waited.

My leg bounced under the plastic chair. Every minute felt like an hour, every shadow in the empty hallway seemed to loom. I kept glancing at Lily’s arm, the small bruise a burning indictment against Eleanor.

Finally, a nurse called Lily’s name.

We followed her into a small examination room. A few minutes later, the door opened, and a man stepped in. He wasn’t wearing scrubs, but a neat polo shirt under a lab coat. He had a kind face, framed by dark, intelligent eyes.

“Hello, I’m Dr. Kincaid,” he said, his voice calm and reassuring. “I’m a pediatric nurse-advocate here. The triage nurse mentioned a concern about a bruise on your daughter’s arm.”

He smiled gently at Maya. “And you must be Maya. And Leo.”

I nodded, grateful for his steady presence. “Yes. We just… we need someone to look at this.”

He moved to the examination table, his movements precise and unhurried. Maya carefully unwrapped Lily’s arm, revealing the small, purplish crescent. Dr. Kincaid bent closer, his eyes scanning the mark, then the rest of Lily’s tiny body, gently checking her shoulders, her legs.

“Tell me what happened,” he prompted, not looking up. His fingers were incredibly gentle as he palpated the skin around the bruise.

I recounted the events of the evening, glossing over the deepest emotional wounds but focusing on Eleanor’s physical aggression towards Maya, and my sudden, terrible realization about Lily’s injury. Maya added her fragmented memories of Eleanor’s tight grip two days prior.

Dr. Kincaid listened without interruption, his expression unreadable. When we finished, he straightened up, pulling on a pair of sterile gloves. He took out a small measuring tape, noting the bruise’s exact dimensions. He also used a specialized light, shining it over the mark.

“This is what we call a ‘grab mark’,” he explained softly, looking at us. “The crescent shape is consistent with pressure from a finger or thumb. Given her age, six weeks, and the location, it’s concerning.”

My stomach lurched. “So it’s… not an accident?”

“It’s highly unlikely for an infant of this age to sustain an injury like this accidentally,” Dr. Kincaid confirmed, his voice grave. “Babies this young don’t typically roll or grab objects with enough force to cause such a specific bruise.”

Maya whimpered, pulling Lily closer.

“Given the context you’ve provided, the domestic disturbance, the mention of your employer… I have a legal and ethical obligation here,” Dr. Kincaid said, his gaze meeting mine directly. “This is considered non-accidental trauma. I’m required by law to file a mandatory report with Child Protective Services.”

A cold wave washed over me, then a strange sense of relief. It was out of our hands, in a way. An official body would now be involved.

“A report?” Maya asked, her voice thin. “What does that mean?”

“It means state authorities will open an investigation,” Dr. Kincaid explained. “They’ll contact Eleanor Gable, of course. They’ll assess the living situation and determine if Lily is safe. Given the nature of the report, they’ll act quickly.”

He paused, his eyes softening. “I know this is terrifying, especially when the person involved is family. But Lily’s safety has to be the priority. This report is for her protection.”

He pulled out a form. “I’ll also give you a copy of my medical report. Keep it safe. It documents everything. This is crucial evidence.”

I felt a surge of unexpected hope. We weren’t alone. Dr. Kincaid, a stranger, had stepped into our nightmare and was giving us a lifeline. This was the first concrete step towards fighting back against Eleanor.

“Thank you,” I managed, my voice thick. “Thank you so much.”

He nodded, a small, professional smile. “Of course. My job is to advocate for children. And I believe Lily needs an advocate right now.”

He picked up the phone on the wall. “I’ll make the call to CPS right now. They’ll be in touch with you shortly. You should try to find a safe place to stay away from the estate in the meantime.”

The words echoed Eleanor’s threat. But now, they felt less like a sentence and more like a strategy. We had somewhere to go. We had a plan.
