The official report to Child Protective Services acted like a match to dry tinder. Eleanor’s retaliation was swift and brutal, far more extensive than I could have imagined. We had temporarily relocated to a cheap motel fifteen miles from the estate, trying to keep a low profile, but her reach was long.

My phone rang constantly with blocked numbers. When I answered, it was often a local business owner I knew, their voices clipped and apologetic.

“Leo, I’m sorry, man, but Eleanor called,” my former supervisor, Ben, from the estate grounds crew, stammered. “She said… she said you assaulted her.”

My jaw dropped. “What? That’s a lie!”

“Yeah, well, she’s got a lot of pull,” he muttered, clearly uncomfortable. “She said she’d make sure no one in the county hires me if I talk to you.” He hung up before I could respond.

Eleanor wasn’t just isolating us; she was destroying our reputations. The local grocery store, the hardware store where I’d bought supplies for the estate for years—all suddenly refused to take my calls. My final paycheck from Gable Real Estate Holdings never arrived. When I inquired, I was met with a prerecorded message about “unresolved disciplinary actions.”

“She’s cutting us off,” Maya said, scrolling through her phone, her face pale. “Look at this.”

She held up the screen. It was a local community Facebook group, one usually filled with quaint updates about bake sales and town events. Now, it was a cesspool.

A post from Eleanor Gable herself, written in a tone of deep sadness, had garnered dozens of comments. It spoke of her “heartbreak” over Maya’s “recent struggles with mental health” and my “irrational behavior.” It painted Maya as an erratic mother, prone to emotional outbursts, and me as her volatile enabler.

“It’s a smear campaign,” I stated, the words tasting like ash. “She’s poisoning everyone against us.”

“People are believing it, Leo,” Maya whispered, pointing to comments like, “Poor Eleanor, always trying to help her family,” and “I always thought Maya seemed a little… high-strung.”

One comment in particular, from someone named ‘Arthur Pendelton,’ stood out. “It’s a tragic situation when mental instability compromises a child’s welfare. Eleanor has always put family first.”

Arthur Pendelton. The notary who had co-signed the emergency guardianship papers. He was part of this, too.

The phone rang again. This time it was Dr. Kincaid.

“Leo, I just wanted to check in,” he said, his voice calm. “CPS confirmed they’ve opened a case file. They’ll be contacting Eleanor shortly. Are you two safe?”

“We’re… safe, for now,” I replied, looking around the dingy motel room. “But Eleanor is going full throttle. She’s cutting off my pay, turning everyone in town against us.”

“That’s a common tactic in these situations,” Dr. Kincaid said, sounding unsurprised. “She’s trying to discredit you, make you seem unreliable to CPS. Don’t engage with the social media posts. Stick to the facts with the investigators.”

“It’s hard, Dr. Kincaid,” Maya interjected, her voice trembling. “Everyone thinks I’m crazy now. What if CPS believes her?”

“They’re trained to look past that kind of manipulation,” he assured her. “They’ll assess the evidence. The medical report on Lily’s bruise is powerful. And your testimony, Maya, detailing the isolation and abuse, is critical.”

I felt a surge of frustration. “It feels like we’re losing. She has all the power, all the connections.”

“She has money and influence,” Dr. Kincaid conceded. “But you have truth, and now you have an official investigation. That balances the scales more than you think.”

Just as he finished speaking, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown number. I almost ignored it, bracing for another local business owner cutting ties. But something made me answer.

“Hello?” I said, my voice tight.

“Is this Leo Gable?” a hesitant female voice asked. “My name is Martha Higgins. I used to work for Eleanor. I heard what’s happening. And I think… I think I can help you.”

My heart pounded. A stranger. A glimmer of something beyond Eleanor’s control.
