Chapter 8: Eleanor’s Whisper

👉 Previous Decision: You either secured the 1888 covenant from Evelyn or gained partial access through Silas’s override.

The headset on desk #4, now dark and silent on my console, crackled again. The incoming call light remained unlit.

Through the static, the phantom voice on Trunk-88 spoke, clearer than before. It wasn’t random static anymore. It was a direct transmission.

“Basement switchboard room,” the voice whispered, low and urgent. “Hollow wall… behind the plaster… page 18… line 7.”

Silas’s head snapped up. His eyes, usually so calm, widened with a mix of recognition and fear.

“Eleanor,” he breathed, a hand going to his deaf left ear. “That’s Eleanor Hollister.”

My grand-aunt, who vanished in October 1988. The same year Trunk-88 was decommissioned. The hairs on my arms stood on end.

“She was trying to stop Julian’s father,” Silas explained, his voice hushed. “From signing the original private loan covenants. Said it would curse the land.”

The voice repeated the instructions, almost like a broken record. “Page 18… line 7… hollow wall…”

A chill ran down my spine. The spectral signal wasn’t a threat. It was an unbroken historic recording. A desperate message from beyond, trying to expose the title fraud that ran through generations of my family.

“The 1888 ledger,” I said, a sudden clarity washing over me. “The original. It’s hidden in the basement.”

Silas nodded slowly. “She knew. She knew the truth about the land. And she tried to burn the original covenant that night.”

The pieces clicked into place: the 1988 disappearance, the decommissioned phone line, the ancestral property, and Julian’s frantic attempts to sell. Eleanor hadn’t vanished. She was trapped, a voice on a line that refused to die, desperately trying to protect the Hollister legacy.

The voice crackled one last time, a faint, almost relieved sigh. “He’ll destroy it…”
