Chapter 18: The Quiet Corner

On Thursday afternoon, the executive committee called an emergency closed-door meeting on the 30th floor. The polished wood and expensive art of the boardroom felt like a cold, impenetrable fortress.

Without allowing Attorney Ross or me to present our documents, without even a pretense of hearing my side, the board voted 5-2 to suspend my employment completely. My access cards were to be locked and deactivated at 5:00 PM sharp.

As I gathered my coat from the basement office, a sudden shadow fell across the doorway. Sarah Jenkins slipped into the room, closing the heavy steel door behind her with a soft click, plunging us into a brief, hushed intimacy.

“They’re revoking your badge in twenty minutes, Clara,” Sarah whispered, her face pale, the stress etched around her eyes. Her fingers trembled slightly.

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a heavy silver master key card. It had a distinct red clearance strip, a symbol of ultimate access. The weight of it in her hand seemed immense.

“What is this?” I asked, my voice barely audible.

“It’s the master key card for Arthur’s private off-site vault at the First Illinois Depository,” Sarah said, her hands shaking slightly as she pressed it into my palm. “Compliance officers aren’t supposed to take these out of the building. It’s a breach of protocol, a serious one. If Marcus finds out I gave this to you, I’ll lose my pension and my entire career.”

“Why are you doing this, Sarah?” I asked, the question escaping on a breath. Her risk was immense.

Sarah looked me dead in the eye, her gaze steady despite her trembling hands. “Because fifteen years ago, Gerald Finch audited my sister’s small accounting firm. He manufactured charges, destroyed her life for a corporate client who wanted her out of the way. He’s a dirty liar, Clara, and Marcus is worse. Go get what Arthur left for you. Burn them all.”

Your career in this firm ends the moment Arthur Davenport dies, Clara, my senior co-manager Marcus whispered, dropping a 200-page termination clause onto my desk.
