Chapter 18: The Quiet Corner

Later that afternoon, the storm had finally cleared, leaving behind a sky of crisp, washed-out blue. I met Beatrice and Julian Davenport in Arthur’s former office, now meticulously cleaned of any trace of Marcus’s frantic shredding.

Julian looked down at the carpet, unable to meet my eyes, his face a roadmap of regret and shame. Beatrice sat rigid in her chair, clutching her leather handbag tightly, her usual air of superiority replaced by a brittle defensiveness.

“Are you going to sue us for filing that petition?” Beatrice asked, her voice tight with residual pride, but laced with apprehension. She still clung to the pretense of dignity.

“I’m dropping the court petition,” I replied calmly, opening a folder on the desk. “Arthur didn’t leave you out of his will out of malice, Beatrice. He left you out because he knew Marcus would try to use you, to manipulate your greed.”

I pushed a document across the desk, a new set of terms.

“This is a legitimate family trust allocation,” I explained. “It’s funded by Arthur’s personal liquid accounts, separate from the firm’s assets. It pays your living expenses and clears Julian’s gambling debts, on one condition.”

Julian’s head snapped up. “What condition?” he asked eagerly, hope flickering in his eyes.

“You surrender all claims to Davenport Capital stock and never step foot inside this building again,” I said, my gaze firm, sweeping from Julian to Beatrice. “Arthur built this firm through hard work, not inheritance. From now on, it will be run by people who work for it, who earn their place.”

Julian, seeing his chance at a clean slate, grabbed the pen and signed immediately, not even bothering to read the fine print. Beatrice, after a long, drawn-out moment of simmering resentment, reluctantly followed suit. Their part in Marcus’s scheme was over, and their ties to the firm, severed.
