Damon’s move for guardianship was a clear signal: he intended to lock Albert away, silence him completely. There was no time to waste. I had to reach Albert before Damon’s lawyers cemented their control.

My phone rang. It was Albert’s longtime housekeeper, Ms. Evelyn. Her voice, usually calm and steady, was laced with panic.

“Ms. Jenkins, they’re here,” she whispered into the phone. “Mr. Ellison’s lawyers. They’re trying to get Mr. Washington to sign papers, saying he needs full-time care. And they’re trying to keep me out of the room.”

“Don’t let them isolate him, Ms. Evelyn,” I urged, my heart pounding. “Tell him I’m on my way. Stall them for as long as you can.”

I drove like a madwoman, weaving through Atlanta traffic. When I arrived at Albert’s stately brick residence, two unfamiliar black SUVs were parked in the driveway. A grim-faced man in a suit stood by the front door, speaking into his phone.

Ms. Evelyn, bless her heart, had managed to create a diversion. She had loudly declared that the kitchen sink was overflowing and was demanding the lawyers help her with it, creating enough chaos for a few crucial minutes.

Taking my chance, I slipped past the man at the door while he was distracted, entering through the side gate Ms. Evelyn always left unlocked for me. I moved quickly, silently, through the manicured garden, around to the back door.

I found Albert in his study, looking frail but defiant. Two lawyers from Damon’s firm stood over him, holding documents. Albert’s personal attorney, Mr. Davies, looked frustrated but seemed unable to cut through the noise.

Ms. Evelyn, water bucket in hand, was loudly complaining about a “burst pipe,” successfully drawing the lawyers’ attention to the hallway for a moment.

“Albert,” I whispered, rushing to his side. “Damon’s trying to get you declared incompetent. They’ll put you in a facility, control everything.”

His eyes, though tired, held a spark of his old fire. “I know, Maya. I won’t let them.”

Mr. Davies, seeing me, quickly produced a new set of papers. “Albert, we need to move. This is an emergency Power of Attorney. It designates Maya as your trustee representative, giving her the authority to defend the 1984 covenant.”

Albert didn’t hesitate. His hand trembled slightly, but his signature, though a little shakier than usual, was clear and firm on the document. Mr. Davies quickly counter-signed and stamped it.

“This gives her full legal standing,” Mr. Davies explained, handing me the signed document. “They won’t be able to push her aside as easily now.”

Just then, Damon’s lawyers, having realized Ms. Evelyn’s “emergency” was a ruse, stormed back into the study.

“What is the meaning of this?” one of them barked, seeing me with Albert.

“This is private counsel with my client, Mr. Washington,” Mr. Davies stated calmly, stepping between them. “And Ms. Jenkins is now his designated trustee representative.”

He held up the freshly signed Power of Attorney. The lawyers’ faces fell, a mix of surprise and fury.

Damon’s lawyer lunged forward, trying to snatch the document from my hand, but Mr. Davies was quicker, shielding me.

“That’s an invalid signature!” the lawyer yelled. “Under duress!”

“Witnessed and notarized,” Mr. Davies retorted, a glint in his eye. “You’re too late.”

I clutched the document. It wasn’t a silver bullet, but it was a shield. Albert had trusted me, despite everything, to protect his legacy. Now, armed with this and Dr. Dubois’s forensic report, I finally had a way to fight back.
