Grieving Medical Researcher Tracks Rare Hives to a $4.2 Million Illegal Drug Trial, Only to Discover His Physician Son Gaslighting Him to Cover Up His Late Mother's Fatal Secret Contract
The air in the lab crackled, thick with unspoken threats. The enforcers, silent and imposing, moved with practiced efficiency. Their presence alone was enough to freeze the desperate confrontation between Julian and me.
One of them, a man with a scarred cheek and eyes like chipped flint, stepped forward. He didn’t acknowledge my presence, his gaze fixed solely on Julian.
“Dr. Hensley,” the enforcer stated, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, “Viktor Kroll sends his regards.”
Julian, who had been trembling, now stood rigid, his breath catching in his throat.
“I… I can explain,” Julian stammered, his voice thin. “There was a misunderstanding. The intellectual property is sound, I assure you—”
The enforcer raised a hand, cutting him off mid-sentence. “Your legal liability has been thoroughly assessed. Your unauthorized use of non-compliant intellectual property, and the resulting exposure of the network to extreme legal hazard, is unacceptable.”
He took another step, closing the distance between them. I watched, numb, as the enforcer’s gaze remained fixed on my son, a predator’s unwavering focus.
“This operation, and your involvement in it,” the enforcer continued, “is officially terminated. Effective immediately.”
He gestured to one of his men, who moved with startling speed to Julian’s side. Before Julian could react, the man firmly but gently took hold of Julian’s arm, not roughly, but with an undeniable grip of control.
“No, wait!” Julian cried, finally finding his voice, a high-pitched protest. “Father, tell them! Tell them it’s mine! Tell them I can fix it!” He turned his desperate eyes to me, a flicker of his old manipulation, now overlaid with genuine fear.
The enforcer from before, the one with the scarred cheek, turned his head slightly. His gaze swept over me for a fleeting second, dismissing. Then, a firm hand landed on my shoulder.
“Dr. Hensley,” he said, his voice surprisingly soft, but with an underlying steel, “your cooperation in identifying this… irregularity… is appreciated. Your continued silence is expected.”
He gave my shoulder a slight, almost imperceptible shove, guiding me away from Julian, away from the scene. It wasn’t violent, but it was absolute. I stumbled back a step, powerless.
Julian thrashed, his composure finally shattering. “You can’t do this! This is my life’s work! My mother’s legacy!”
The enforcer with the scarred cheek leaned in close to Julian. His words were too low for me to hear clearly over the drumming rain, but I saw Julian’s face crumple. Whatever he said, it was final. It was cold. It sealed my son’s fate.
He then pulled back. “You have been marked for permanent removal from our organization, Dr. Hensley.”
The finality in his voice was absolute. Julian’s eyes, wide and terrified, darted frantically between the three men, then landed on me, a desperate, silent plea. But I could do nothing. I was a bystander in an underworld tribunal, utterly helpless.
The truth about Clara, about Julian’s full extent of his deception, remained agonizingly out of reach.
