Chapter 9: Julian’s Powerless Rage

#content-1

The chemical fumes stung my nostrils, a burning reminder of what I had just done. The bubbling acid in the vat continued its silent work, erasing history, erasing futures.

Julian stumbled again, his legs giving out. He collapsed against a cold steel shelf, his head hitting the metal with a soft thud. His body shook.

A raw, guttural scream tore from his throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated rage and despair. It was muted by the soundproofed room, a primal shriek trapped within the walls.

He clawed at his hair, his eyes darting frantically between the fuming vat and my impassive face. He understood. He couldn’t go to the press now. He couldn’t claim I’d destroyed *his* work without revealing the true contents of the micro-reel. He couldn’t expose his father’s treason without ruining his own name.

He had no usable material, no grant, no leverage left. Just the knowledge of what I had erased.

His screams dissolved into gasps, then whimpers. He pressed his palms to his eyes, his entire body wracked with shuddering. He was utterly, completely undone. His empire of lies had collapsed, taking with it decades of his family’s carefully crafted honor. He was left with nothing but the acrid smell of acid and the impossible silence of his defeat.
