Chapter 12: The Quiet Aftermath

The adjournment felt less like a pause and more like a precipice. The legal team had seized control, and the company was in a holding pattern.

Julian, his face pale and eyes wide, was gently but firmly escorted out of the room by the corporate security team, Barnaby’s cage still in his trembling hand. The parrot, sensing the tension, was completely silent.

“Chairwoman Garrison,” I began, as soon as Davies had finished speaking and Julian was out of earshot. “With Julian’s suspension, there will be an immediate leadership vacuum and significant market instability.”

I looked around the table at the remaining board members, their faces grim. Four hundred workers depended on Pendelton Logistics.

“I propose an immediate stabilization plan,” I continued, projecting a new slide onto the screen from Chloe’s laptop. It outlined a series of measures:
1. Appointment of an interim COO from within the logistics division.
2. A transparent communication strategy to reassure investors and clients.
3. A review of all current high-value contracts to mitigate risk.
4. Formation of an internal ethics committee.

“This will prevent immediate panic,” I explained, gesturing to the bullet points. “And protect the firm’s 400 workers from the inevitable fallout.”

Martha Sterling-Garrison studied the plan, her brow furrowed. “This is a sensible approach, Arthur. But given the circumstances…”

Before she could finish, the boardroom doors opened again. This time, it was not corporate legal counsel, but a man in an expensive dark suit, followed by two stern-faced individuals.

“Mr. Arthur Pendelton?” the man announced, holding up a document. “I am Mr. Thorne, representing Mr. Julian Pendelton. I am here to serve an injunction.”

My heart sank. Julian hadn’t wasted a second.

Mr. Thorne approached the table, placing the document with a soft thud. “This injunction freezes all executive decision-making within Pendelton Logistics, effective immediately. It cites an ongoing internal investigation and potential civil litigation, making any unilateral decisions by any board member null and void.”

“You can’t do this,” Martha Sterling-Garrison snapped, her patience clearly at an end. “This company needs leadership now!”

“My client believes any actions taken under duress or perceived ’emergency’ would prejudice his position,” Mr. Thorne replied smoothly, not even looking at the Chairwoman. He glanced at me, a cold, practiced smirk on his face.

“Until the full scope of these… allegations… are adjudicated,” he continued, “all major corporate actions are suspended. My client intends to fight these accusations vigorously.”

The room fell silent once more. Julian’s lawyer had effectively chained the company to the dock, leaving it unable to steer itself through the gathering storm.

The company, my father’s legacy, now hung in limbo, paralyzed by legal maneuvers.
