Chapter 12: Clean Poetic Justice Epilogue

The pressure on Howard Gable was mounting. With Julianna’s political party pulling its endorsement and Sarah Chen’s initial reports now leading to official investigations, the corrupt appraiser found himself caught in the crosshairs. My legal team, led by Thomas, had been relentless, filing a civil suit against him for fraud related to the Pendelton estate valuations.

One overcast morning, a call came from Gable’s attorney. He was willing to talk.

Thomas and I met Gable at his lawyer’s sterile office in downtown Philadelphia. Gable looked disheveled, his usually slicked-back hair falling across his forehead, his suit jacket rumpled. The air in the room was thick with unspoken fear and desperation.

“Mr. Gable,” Thomas began, his voice calm, “we have evidence linking you to a pattern of fraudulent appraisals and notarizations, specifically in relation to the Pendelton estate and Julianna Pendelton’s campaign. The state is now investigating. We believe you have information that could mitigate your own liability.”

Gable wrung his hands. “She… she put me up to it,” he stammered, avoiding my gaze. “She said it was ‘standard practice’ for campaign financing. That everyone did it.”

“Did she explicitly instruct you to falsify the valuations and notarize documents knowing they misrepresented the ownership or control of Fallow House?” I asked directly, my voice devoid of emotion.

Gable’s eyes darted to his attorney, who gave a small, almost imperceptible nod. He had clearly advised Gable to cooperate.

“Yes,” Gable whispered, his voice cracking. “She gave me figures. Told me what dates to backdate. She made it clear that if I didn’t comply, my firm would lose all future contracts with her real estate ventures and anyone she had influence with.”

He then pulled a small, worn digital recorder from his pocket. “I… I started recording our calls. Just in case. For my own protection.”

He looked at me, a flicker of something akin to remorse in his eyes. “She orchestrated the whole thing. The inflated appraisals, the dates on the notarizations, even the gaslighting about your memory of the trust agreement. She knew it had expired. She told me to make sure any new documents looked as though I’d reviewed the old ones and found them perfectly valid.”

The twist was Gable’s confession, complete with physical evidence. Not only did he admit to the fraud, but he delivered undeniable audio recordings directly implicating Julianna in the entire scheme, proving she knew the trust was expired and deliberately orchestrated the property seizure and my psychological manipulation. This was the final, devastating piece of the puzzle.
