Julian Croft was a man who prided himself on his local connections. He knew everyone in Oak Creek, and everyone knew his accounting firm, Croft & Associates.
But today, his meticulously organized office felt like a trap. The stack of unopened mail on his desk mocked him.
One envelope, in particular, was from the State Licensing Board for Certified Public Accountants. His hands trembled slightly as he tore it open.
The words blurred at first, then snapped into focus: “Formal Notice of Immediate Audit. All notarized filings for the past five years are under review, pending investigation into potential irregularities and federal fraud flags.”
Federal. The word hit him like a physical blow. He remembered the minor tax discrepancy from years ago, dismissed as a clerical error. Now it was back, a ghost from the past.
He immediately understood. The Power of Attorney he’d notarized for Chloe, the one giving her control over Evelyn’s assets. That must have been it. That was the link.
His phone began to ring. It was Chloe, her name flashing frantically on the screen. He ignored it.
Then it rang again. And again. Desperate, back-to-back calls.
Croft stared at his desk, at the meticulous ledger he kept, at the subtle alterations he’d made over the years for “favors,” for “quick cash.” The gambling debts that had pushed him to take these risks.
His carefully constructed world of local respectability was collapsing. Federal prosecution. Loss of his license. Ruin.
He grabbed his keys, then his “Closed for Lunch” sign. He flipped the deadbolt on the office door, the click echoing hollowly in the sudden silence.
He didn’t answer Chloe’s calls. He wouldn’t. He couldn’t. His only thought was to disappear, to outrun the unseen net that was tightening around him.
