Leaving the ranch felt like tearing a piece of myself away. The silence of the small, rented room I found in town was jarring after the comforting sounds of the farmhouse. But I knew it was necessary. I wouldn’t let Derek use me as a weapon against Abel and Rosie.

The emergency injunction hearing was looming. Time was running out. I couldn’t just sit there, helpless.

Even though I was no longer physically at the ranch, I continued to work. My laptop became my constant companion. I poured over the recovered text messages again and again, cross-referencing names, dates, amounts. I added notes, building a comprehensive timeline of Derek’s deceit.

The primary evidence, the full thread of recovered text messages between Derek and Croft, was still the key. I had them on my laptop. But I also had a backup plan.

I remembered a small, prepaid burner smartphone I’d bought months ago, tucked away for emergencies. It had limited features, but it could connect to the cloud. Carefully, methodically, I synced the entire text message thread and all my investigative notes to that secondary phone.

I didn’t keep it with me. Derek was too cunning, too ruthless. He would be watching.

The next time Abel brought Leo to visit, pretending it was just a trip to the local park, I pulled him aside.

“Leo, I need your help with something important,” I whispered, kneeling down to his level.

His eyes, usually full of mischief, grew serious. “What is it, Mama?”

I showed him the small burner phone. “This is a special phone, Leo. It has all the answers that will help Abel and Rosie.”

“Answers?” he asked, his brow furrowing.

“Yes. Important information. It needs to be kept safe. A very, very secret place.”

I walked him through it, explaining the importance of the phone, the need to keep it hidden. We decided on the best hiding spot: deep inside his toy chest, beneath a pile of old stuffed animals. A place no one would ever suspect.

“Only Mama can touch this, okay?” I instructed. “Unless… unless Mama tells you to give it to someone very special, like the Sheriff.”

Leo, ever the protector, nodded with serious determination. “My secret, Mama.”

The preliminary court hearing was scheduled for the following morning. The tension in the air was palpable. I spent the evening making final preparations on my laptop, organizing my testimony, when I heard a faint scraping sound outside my rental room.

I froze.

A moment later, the doorknob rattled. Not a gentle rattle, but a forced, jiggling attempt. My heart leaped into my throat.

I snatched up the laptop, my mind racing. I knew I couldn’t fight them. I ducked into the tiny bathroom, my hand shaking as I closed the door.

Then, the sickening crack of wood splintering. The front door of my rental room burst open.

Heavy footsteps entered the room. I heard the rustling of papers, the sounds of drawers being pulled open, furniture being moved. Derek’s associates. They must have been watching me, waiting for the perfect moment.

I pressed myself against the cold tile, my breath held. They were looking for my laptop, for the evidence.

A few minutes later, the sounds stopped. The footsteps retreated. The front door creaked shut, then a final, heavy click of the lock. They were gone.

I waited, listening, until the silence stretched for what felt like an eternity. Finally, I crept out.

My small room was in disarray. My clothes were tossed from the dresser, books scattered, mattress pulled partly off the bed frame. And my laptop bag lay open, empty.

My primary laptop, with all my carefully compiled evidence, was gone.

A cold dread washed over me, then a fierce determination. Derek thought he had destroyed all my evidence, that he had won. But he had no idea about the burner phone, hidden deep in a child’s toy chest.
