Chapter 14: Solitude in the Rain

The first heavy drops of rain began to fall, turning the muddy courtyard into a slick, treacherous expanse. The wind howled, whipping Elias’s robes around him like a mad prophet’s shroud. He stood by the gate control, shouting incomprehensible pronouncements about divine judgment and purging.

The air crackled with an ominous energy. The smell of ozone filled my nostrils.

Then, a blinding flash, brighter than anything I had ever seen. The entire compound was bathed in an unearthly white light. A deafening *CRACK* ripped through the sky, so powerful it felt like it tore open the very fabric of reality.

The central radio tower, a tall, spindly structure that had loomed over the compound for decades, exploded.

It wasn’t just a strike; it was a direct hit. Sparks flew, metal screamed, and the entire tower buckled, shearing off its base with a horrifying shriek of tortured steel.

In slow motion, the massive structure began to topple. It fell directly toward the compound’s main propane tank array—a cluster of enormous, rust-colored cylinders that supplied gas to the entire facility.

I had barely enough time to register what was happening before the tower crashed down. The impact was immense. A cacophony of screeching metal and shattering concrete echoed through the compound.

Then, an instant later, a colossal fireball erupted.

The propane tanks, ruptured by the collapsing tower, ignited in a roaring inferno. A wave of heat, so intense it felt physical, swept across the gravel yard, knocking people off their feet. The air was sucked out of my lungs.

The front exit, the very gates Elias had just slammed shut, was now a wall of fire. The guard house, where the gate controls were housed, was engulfed in flames, its windows exploding outward from the heat.

Screams filled the air. Pure, unadulterated terror. The thunder and lightning continued, an apocalyptic soundtrack to the unfolding disaster. Elias’s “divine judgment” had taken a horrifying, literal turn. We were trapped.
