My Husband Smashed My Mute Daughter's Film Camera at a High-Society Gala — Until an Old Letter Dropped Out and Exposed His Darkest Secret
Richard, watching Drake’s humiliating fall, seemed to snap. The last vestiges of his composure evaporated, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal’s rage.
His eyes, wide and wild, darted around the room. He saw his opportunity.
“No!” he roared, a guttural sound of pure panic. He lunged for the library desk, a heavy antique piece with a hidden compartment he occasionally used for sensitive documents.
“There’s a gun!” I screamed, recognizing the desk instantly. He kept an unregistered firearm, a small pistol, hidden inside.
Marcus’s men reacted instantly, drawing their own weapons with a series of metallic clicks. The grand drawing room, once a symbol of opulence, became a terrifying tableau of drawn guns and raw fear.
“Clara, run!” I shrieked, shoving her with all my strength towards the broken glass patio doors leading to the back courtyard. “Go! Now!”
But Richard was too fast. He had already reached the desk, fumbling with the hidden latch. His hand closed around something metallic.
As Marcus’s men advanced, weapons raised, Richard spun around, not with a pistol, but with a heavy, ornate brass letter opener, its blade glinting wickedly in the dim emergency light. He was desperate, unhinged.
He didn’t fire. Instead, he lunged for me.
His hand clamped around my throat, fingers digging in, suffocating me. He yanked me backward, pulling me against him, using me as a human shield.
“Stay back!” Richard screamed, his voice hoarse, the letter opener pressed against my temple. “One step closer, and she dies!”
The syndicate enforcers froze, their weapons still aimed, but their shots now impossible without hitting me.
My vision blurred. The air was cut off. I clawed at his arm, but his grip was like iron. Clara, who had almost made it to the doors, turned back, her eyes wide with terror. She started signing frantically, her hands flying, but no sound came.
*Mommy! No!*
Richard’s breath smelled of whiskey and fear. He pressed the cold metal of the letter opener harder against my skin.
“Let her go, Montgomery,” Marcus said, his voice dangerously calm, his own pistol now aimed steadily at Richard’s head, just above mine. “This isn’t your fight anymore.”
“It’s always been my fight!” Richard snarled, tightening his grip, pulling me even closer. “This is *my* legacy! This is *my* empire!”
He began to drag me backward, towards the heavy oak door leading to the main foyer, away from the syndicate men, away from Clara. His plan was clear: use me to escape.
My feet scrambled uselessly on the polished marble. I could see Clara, frozen, her small hands clasped together, a silent scream etched on her face. Her breathing was ragged, her chest heaving.
The room spun. My air supply was dwindling. I felt myself losing consciousness, caught between the suffocating grip of my husband and the imminent threat of Marcus’s men. This violent struggle, born from decades of deceit, was now playing out in the most brutal, physical way.
