Chapter 12: The Silent Dawn

The sharp, sudden crack of a power line snapping outside plunged the library into an immediate, heavy darkness. The flickering emergency lights barely illuminated Beatrice’s serene, unconcerned face.

A loud, insistent banging began to echo through the estate’s iron gates, a rhythmic, metallic clang that vibrated through the floorboards. *Bang. Bang. Bang.*

Richard’s smug composure instantly shattered. His eyes, now wide with panic, darted towards the sound. “The police!” he gasped, his voice thin and reedy. “They’re here!”

He lunged for the ornate fireplace, a frantic desperation seizing him. A stack of old, yellowed parchment lay on the mantelpiece, tied with a ribbon—the original land deeds of the Montgomery estate.

He tore at them, trying to shove the brittle paper into the barely glowing embers. “They can’t see this!” he muttered, his hands shaking. “The original deeds, they’ll connect everything!”

The guards, suddenly unsure, exchanged uneasy glances. They were paid by Drake, not loyal to Richard’s unraveling schemes.

The banging grew louder, more insistent, then stopped abruptly, replaced by the grating sound of metal being sheared. A low thud. Then silence.

Just as Richard managed to ignite a corner of the old deeds, a figure emerged from the shadows of the glass patio doors, which now stood shattered inward, shards glinting on the marble floor.

It was Marcus Finch, his silhouette framed by the stormy night outside. He wasn’t alone. Three other men, burly and silent, followed him, their faces grim.

Marcus held a heavy brass briefcase, its polished surface reflecting the emergency lights like a dark mirror. He moved with a quiet, menacing authority.

Richard froze, the burning deeds momentarily forgotten in his hand. His face went white. He knew.

“Finch,” Richard breathed, his voice barely audible. “What… what do you want?”

Marcus stepped fully into the room, the briefcase held casually at his side. He didn’t bother with pleasantries.

“I believe you owe my associates a rather substantial sum, Montgomery,” Marcus said, his gravelly voice cutting through the tense silence. “The records in this briefcase, for instance, prove you diverted twelve million dollars from our offshore accounts five years ago.”

Richard stared at the briefcase, then at Marcus, his jaw slack. “That’s impossible,” he stammered. “I had those records deleted. All of them.”

A cold, hard smile touched Marcus’s lips. “Nothing is ever truly deleted in our world, Richard. Especially not when it involves the cost of water.”

My mind reeled. Twelve million dollars? Richard hadn’t just used his family’s trust; he’d stolen from the very syndicate he now sought protection from. This wasn’t the police. This was something far, far worse.

The air thrummed with unspoken violence. Richard, trapped between his exposed crimes and the wrath of men who operated outside the law, began to tremble. His game was over.
