Chapter 1: The Call from 414 Crowridge Lane

#content-1

Part 1

The fluorescent lights of the Black Ridge dispatch center hummed with a low, unwavering thrum. It was almost 3 AM, and the night shift felt endless. Seventeen-year-old Lily Danforth adjusted her headset, a faint ache already settling behind her eyes.

Another call pinged. The screen flashed “Incoming Emergency.”

Lily took a deep breath, pushing away the exhaustion. Her brother, Toby, was asleep at home, and she needed to stay sharp for him. Her meager intern pay was barely enough to cover his asthma medication, let alone their bills.

“Black Ridge 911, what’s your emergency?” Lily recited, her voice practiced and steady despite her age.

A choked gasp, followed by a frantic, barely coherent whisper, crackled through the earpiece. It was a young woman’s voice, laced with sheer terror.

“They’re… they’re inside!” the caller stammered, her words punctuated by ragged, shallow breaths. “Oh God, please, help me!”

Lily leaned closer to the console, her fatigue momentarily forgotten. This wasn’t a prank call; the fear was raw, visceral.

“Ma’am, I need you to stay calm,” Lily instructed, her fingers flying across the keyboard to initiate a trace. “What is your address? Who is ‘they’?”

A crashing sound echoed through the line, followed by a muffled shriek. Lily flinched, imagining the horror unfolding on the other end.

“Please!” the caller pleaded, her voice trembling, dissolving into sobs. “He’s… he’s in my room! Get out! Get out!”

“Ma’am, tell me your address!” Lily urged, her own heart beginning to pound. “I can’t send help without an address. Are you hurt?”

There was a moment of silence, broken only by what sounded like a door being violently forced open, then a strangled whimper.

“It’s… it’s 414,” the caller choked out, her voice barely a whisper now, as if she were trying to hide.

Lily typed “414” into the address field, her gaze fixed on the screen, waiting for the street name. A sense of unease, cold and sharp, began to prickle at the back of her neck.

“Crowridge Lane,” the caller whimpered, the words barely audible now, as if she were sinking under water. “414 Crowridge Lane. They’re… they’re taking me.”

The blood drained from Lily’s face. Her fingers froze on the keyboard. Her breath hitched in her throat.

414 Crowridge Lane.

That was *her* house. Her home address. The house where Toby, her frail ten-year-old brother, was sleeping soundly in his bed. Alone.

A wave of icy terror washed over her, chilling her to the bone. It couldn’t be. It was impossible. She was here, safe in the dispatch center. Toby was safe in his room. It had to be a mistake. A sick, cruel joke.

“Ma’am, can you confirm that address?” Lily demanded, her voice tight with a newfound, desperate urgency. “Is this 414 Crowridge Lane?”

The line went silent again, but this time, it was a deeper, more unsettling quiet. Not the quiet of someone hiding, but the quiet of… absence.

Then, a faint, ethereal sigh drifted across the connection. It was filled with an ancient sorrow, a profound despair that seemed to echo from beyond the grave.

“He’s coming for you, Lily,” the voice whispered, no longer frantic, but eerily calm, otherworldly. “He’s coming for all of us.”

Lily’s jaw dropped. The voice. It wasn’t just familiar. It was impossible. She recognized it from old family photos, from faded memories, from stories whispered in hushed tones. It was the voice of her mother’s cousin, Sarah, who had died tragically in a house fire almost twenty years ago, long before Lily was born.

Sarah. The ghost stories of 414 Crowridge Lane.

Before Lily could even process the impossible truth, before she could scream a warning into the dead line, before she could dial Toby’s number, the heavy, metallic swing-door of the Black Ridge dispatch office creaked open behind her with a slow, deliberate groan.

Part 2

My blood ran cold. I whirled around, heart hammering against my ribs.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the harsh fluorescent light, was Eleanor Garrick. My mother-in-law.

Her eyes, usually so sharp, held a triumphant glint. In her perfectly manicured hands, she clutched a stack of official-looking documents.

“Well, Lily,” she purred, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. “It seems we have a situation at 414 Crowridge Lane, don’t we?”

She stepped closer, placing the papers directly on my console. “Emergency guardianship. Eviction notice.”

“Sign these over, or the officers I’ve already called will remove Toby by court order. The choice is yours.”
