Chapter 1: The Cold Proposition

#content-1

Part 1

intricately orchestrated betrayal that shattered a family:

**My Stepmother Forced Me on a Blind Date with a Man Who Demanded My Inheritance — But I Had a Secret That Would Undo Their Entire Scheme.**

“Aanya, you simply must meet him,” my stepmother Priya insisted, waving off my protests about a blind date with a man she barely knew. Two weeks later, sitting across from Rohan Khanna, a high-flying investment banker chosen by Priya, he grabbed my wrist, his eyes cold.

“Sign this pre-nuptial agreement,” he demanded, a thick stack of papers slid across the table, “or your family loses everything.”

I stared at the documents, then at Rohan’s impassive face. This was no romantic overture. This was an ambush. He outlined his proposal, his words precise and devoid of warmth, detailing how the marriage would secure the Sharma family’s ancestral land under his management. My objections were met with a condescending smile.

“Surely you understand the gravity of this, Aanya,” he said, tapping the papers. “It’s a mere formality. Unless you believe you have a better solution?”

My mind raced, the weight of Priya’s earlier words about “securing our future” now chillingly clear. Rohan seemed entirely confident, oblivious to the hidden life I led. He folded his arms, waiting for my answer.

How could I possibly explain to him that he had chosen the absolute wrong woman to corner like this?

Part 2

I excused myself from the table, my hand shaking slightly, the pre-nup papers still mocking me. I found Priya in the drawing-room, pruning her orchids, a serene smile on her face.

“Priya,” I began, my voice tight. “Rohan… he wants me to sign a pre-nuptial agreement, for the land. You didn’t tell me.”

She snipped a dead leaf with a sharp click. Her smile didn’t falter.

“Of course, *we* did, Aanya. It’s for our family’s security, my dear. A formal arrangement for everyone’s benefit.”

My heart hammered. “For *everyone*?”

“Yes. A small clause in your mother’s trust, easily overlooked, ensures that if things are managed correctly through your marriage, both you and I will be very well provided for.” She met my gaze, her eyes utterly devoid of remorse.

The air in the room suddenly felt thin. I realized it wasn’t just Rohan I was fighting; my own stepmother had carefully laid this trap for me.
