Public scorn at the Dubois family gala unravels the secret of Zora Mae Jenkins' true power.
Part 1
🎭 **My husband publicly shamed me at the gala and accused me of cheating — but I just made a call that ended his reign.**
At the annual Dubois Family Gala, I watched Elias, my husband of fifteen years, raise a toast that wasn’t for me, but to my humiliation. He publicly declared me a “distraction,” waving dismissively towards Daniel, my childhood friend and confidante, making insinuations that sent titters through the entire ballroom.
His sisters and mother laughed, their gazes icy, as if to say I was now nothing more than a discarded ornament in their opulent lives.
But as I met his eyes across the glittering hall, a strange, unshakeable calm settled over me. I simply nodded, then stepped away from the crowd, pulling out my phone.
“Elias,” I said, my voice barely a whisper into the receiver.
“Your time as the steward of the Dubois legacy ends now. Pack your personal effects.”
“Your access codes will be revoked in thirty minutes, along with any vehicles and accounts still tied to my name.”
I snapped my phone shut, the line still ringing on his end. I rejoined Daniel Price by the champagne fountain, a cool smile on my face.
“My love,” Daniel said, his brow furrowed, “you handled yourself with grace.”
I met his concerned gaze.
“No love, Daniel,” I corrected quietly. “You handled yourself as my chief forensic investigator.”
He paused, his eyes searching mine, before a slow understanding dawned.
“Zora, what have you done?”
“I’ve begun to reclaim what’s mine,” I told him, a flicker of steel in my voice. “And Elias has no idea you’re not just my childhood friend.”
Across the room, Elias stood frozen, his phone still at his ear, his face draining of color. He looked like he’d just seen a ghost. A moment later, his phone rang again, this time with a stern, official-looking caller ID. He answered, listened for only a few seconds, then his eyes darted to me, wide with alarm. He had just received an urgent summons from Judge Silas Dubois, Sr., for an undisclosed “family matter” that afternoon.
Part 2
Elias stormed into Judge Silas’s study, his face still flushed from the gala. He looked at me, then at the judge, who sat impassively behind his desk. Judge Silas’s gaze offered no comfort or censure.
“What is this urgent ‘family matter’?” Elias demanded, his voice sharp.
“It concerns the Dubois Family Legacy Trust,” I said calmly. “The one your grandmother, Elara, established.”
Elias waved a dismissive hand. He clearly believed it was some minor fund.
“The ‘company’ you manage, Elias, is actually the family’s entire substantial legacy,” I explained.
I pushed a folder across the polished desk. “These are just preliminary reports of your misappropriations from it.”
Elias snatched the folder, his eyes quickly scanning the pages. A dry laugh escaped him.
“This is trivial, Zora,” he scoffed. “You’re overreacting to minor accounting adjustments.”
He dropped the folder back onto the desk.
“My mother and sisters will be contacting our mutual acquaintances. They’ll clarify your erratic behavior and the truth of your ‘affair.'”
