Part 1

Maya Driscoll dragged her suitcase through the polished marble lobby of the Harrington Tower, each wheel a small, protesting groan against the pristine silence. Her flight from Phoenix had been delayed, then rerouted, and now, at nearly midnight, every bone in her 45-year-old body screamed for a horizontal surface.

Twenty-five years she’d spent caring for other people’s children, other people’s homes, other people’s lives. She was done.

Her resignation was already on Victoria Harrington’s desk. Two more days, and then freedom. A small cottage by the sea, a quiet life, a chance to finally, truly rest.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, a harsh vibration against her hip. It was the Harrington Tower security app.

A red alert flashed across the screen: *Unusual activity detected in Penthouse A, 13th Floor – Nursery. Movement detected in unauthorized zone.*

Her exhaustion vanished in a jolt of ice-cold dread. Leo. Four-year-old Leo, alone up there.

She picked up her pace, ignoring the fresh ache in her calves. The lobby concierge, a young man named Kevin, was already behind the desk, his face pale. He looked up, his eyes wide with a question he didn’t dare voice.

Maya gave him a tight, urgent nod. She knew.

She swiped her keycard at the private elevator dedicated to Penthouse A. The panel glowed, then went dark. An error message flickered: *Access Denied.*

“Kevin,” she called, her voice sharper than intended. “The private elevator. It’s locked.”

Kevin fumbled with his own tablet, his brow furrowing. “That’s impossible, Ms. Driscoll. It should always be active for direct household staff.”

He tapped furiously, then looked up again, his face even paler. “It says… it says it’s been manually locked from the penthouse side. Override codes are non-responsive.”

Panic, cold and sharp, began to prickle Maya’s skin. Leo was afraid of the dark, afraid of being alone. And the python. Syllas, the massive albino python, Victoria’s bizarre pet. Was it even in its enclosure?

She tried the main passenger elevators, but they were configured to bypass the 13th floor for penthouse residents. No public access.

There was only one way. The service elevator.

She rushed down a dimly lit corridor, past utility closets and loading bays, the glamour of the lobby fading into the stark reality of the building’s hidden veins. The service elevator was slow, creaking its way upward with agonizing slowness.

Every floor clicked by, an eternity. Ten, eleven, twelve…

Finally, the doors rattled open onto the 13th floor.

The hallway was opulent, hushed, the carpet thick beneath her worn sneakers. But something was wrong. The air was thick with an unnatural stillness, broken only by the distant, faint hum of the building’s ventilation system.

And then she saw her. Victoria Harrington, impeccably dressed even at this hour, stood directly in front of the reinforced double doors leading to the penthouse. Her arms were crossed over her chest, a slim portfolio clutched in one hand. Her expression was utterly devoid of warmth.

“Victoria,” Maya gasped, rushing forward. “The security alert—is Leo alright? What’s going on? The elevator is locked.”

Victoria didn’t move. Her gaze was as hard and cold as the polished onyx floor beneath their feet.

“Leo is perfectly fine, Maya,” Victoria said, her voice flat, devoid of any genuine concern. “As for what’s going on, allow me to enlighten you.”

She unfolded the portfolio she held, revealing several sheets of paper. They were official-looking, crisp, with the distinct red and gold seal of a notary public stamped on each page.

“Effective immediately,” Victoria continued, her tone chillingly calm, “your employment is terminated. Furthermore, due to several alleged breaches of contract and confidentiality clauses, I have obtained a temporary restraining order.”

She held the papers out, not offering them, but displaying them like a shield.

“These documents,” Victoria stated, her eyes locking onto Maya’s, “legally bar you from entering Penthouse A. Or indeed, any part of the Harrington estate, ever again.”

Part 2

Maya took a step forward, her hand reaching instinctively for the heavy doors. A large man, Julian Croft, stepped into her path, his face impassive. He held a stack of identical papers.

“Do not attempt to cross this threshold, Maya,” Victoria reiterated, her voice chilling. “These are court orders. Leo is locked inside with Syllas. Any attempt to intervene will result in your immediate arrest and severe prison time for trespassing and kidnapping.”
