Chapter 12: A Quiet Pasture

The drive back to Oakhaven felt different. The familiar landmarks, the distant, rugged mountains, the endless sky—they all seemed to glow with a quiet triumph. The land was ours. Carver was ruined. Nate Higgins, exposed and arrested. Justice, in its own slow way, had been served.

I pulled up to the cabin, a smile already forming on my face. The setting sun cast long, golden shadows across the porch. I imagined Leo’s excitement when I told him. Maybe we could even start to fix up the place.

“Leo! I’m home!” I called out, my voice echoing across the still pasture.

No answer. That was odd. Usually, he’d be rushing to the window, or trying to navigate his crutches to the door.

A knot of unease began to tighten in my stomach. The cabin looked… off. One of the porch supports was leaning precariously, almost snapped. And a section of the roof, above what I knew was Leo’s bedroom, had a deep, sickening sag. The heavy timber ceiling, once a comforting shield, looked almost ready to collapse further.

I rushed inside, my heart now pounding with a different kind of dread. “Leo? Where are you?”

The main room was silent. A few of Leo’s drawings lay scattered on the floor, untouched. I moved towards his small bedroom, the air growing colder, heavier.

“Leo!”

I pushed open the door. He was lying on his bed, not moving. A thick beam from the ceiling had clearly given way, falling directly onto the foot of his bed, bending the old metal frame. A cascade of plaster and wood chips lay everywhere.

“Leo?” I whispered, my voice trembling.

He tried to turn his head, a weak groan escaping his lips. His eyes fluttered open, dark with pain and fear. One arm was pinned beneath the beam. His legs, normally tucked under him, were splayed at an unnatural angle.

“My… my back,” he rasped, tears welling in his eyes. “I can’t feel… I can’t feel my legs, Clara.”

My blood ran cold. The sheer, terrifying weight of the stampede, the ground vibrating with such intensity, must have shaken the old cabin’s already weak foundations. The shuddering impact had been enough to dislodge the heavy timber, causing it to crash down.

Not just onto his bed, but onto him. Onto his fragile spine.

I knelt beside him, my hands shaking as I tried to lift the beam, but it was too heavy. A panicked scream caught in my throat. The legal battle was won. The land was ours. But Leo…

My victory tasted like ash. My brother, my precious Leo, was broken. Permanently.
