My Mentor Sponsored My Tuition Until My Rescue Dog Refused to Eat Near Him — Uncovering the 3-Year Cold Case That Lost Me Everything
The knock on the annex door was sharp, insistent. My heart leaped into my throat. It was too early for Arthur.
I opened it to find Dean Garrick standing on my small porch, her face tight with disapproval. Behind her, Arthur stood on the main house porch, watching us, a small, triumphant smirk playing on his lips.
Dean Garrick was usually a calm, professional woman, but today her posture was rigid. She clutched a thick manila folder.
“Maya, we need to talk,” she said, her voice clipped. She didn’t step inside, maintaining a formal distance.
“Dean Garrick, what’s wrong?” I asked, though I already knew.
“I’ve received some deeply troubling reports, both from Mr. Albright and from various community members,” she began, her gaze unwavering. “Concerns regarding your stability, your character, and your fitness as a parent.”
“It’s not true,” I said quickly. “Arthur is lying. I can explain—”
She held up a hand, cutting me off. “Regardless of the truth of the accusations, Maya, the college cannot afford to be associated with this kind of public controversy.” She opened the folder and pulled out a formal letter. “Mr. Albright’s civic foundation is a significant donor to our institution.”
My stomach clenched. This was it.
“Effective immediately,” she stated, reading from the letter, “your academic scholarship grant has been formally rescinded. All tuition payments from Mr. Albright’s foundation will cease.”
I felt a cold rush of air leave my lungs. My college dreams, gone. My path to a better life for Lily, severed.
“Furthermore,” she continued, her voice softening just slightly, “Mr. Albright has also informed the college that he is terminating your tenancy agreement here at the annex. He has provided proper legal notice.”
She handed me an official-looking document. It was a 24-hour notice to vacate.
“Twenty-four hours?” I whispered, my voice hoarse. “Where are we supposed to go?”
Dean Garrick’s face remained impassive. “I understand this is difficult, Maya. But these are Mr. Albright’s property rights. The college cannot intervene in a private tenancy dispute.”
She paused, then added, her tone a little colder. “I also have to inform you that, given the concerns about your parental fitness, we will be making a mandatory report to social services, as per college policy regarding students living on-campus property.”
My head snapped up. Social services. Arthur’s threat wasn’t empty. He was following through.
She turned to leave, her back ramrod straight. “I wish you the best of luck, Maya.”
As she walked away, I saw Arthur nod at her, a gesture of quiet affirmation. He had won this round. He had taken my education, my home, and was now trying to take my daughter. I stood there, clutching the eviction notice, my entire future crumbling in my hands.
