I needed to clear my head. The annex felt too small, too full of unspoken questions. I decided to run some errands, starting with picking up a specific canine probiotic from the regional veterinary clinic in Elmwood, about a forty-minute drive.

The clinic was bustling, a cheerful cacophony of barking and cheerful staff. I waited in line, my mind still replaying Clara Hensley’s face from the old newspaper articles.

Suddenly, a voice boomed from behind me. “Well, I’ll be. Barnaby?”

I spun around. An older man, perhaps in his late sixties, stood there. He had a weathered face, a kind but weary gaze, and wore a faded baseball cap. He was looking directly at Buster, who I’d brought with me to keep him from getting too agitated alone in the annex.

“His name’s Buster now,” I said, a knot tightening in my stomach. “Did you know him?”

The man’s eyes were fixed on Buster’s distinctive torn left ear. “That’s Barnaby, all right. No mistaking that ear.” He knelt, and Buster, to my surprise, wagged his tail cautiously. The man moved slowly, gently, stroking Buster’s head. “Haven’t seen you in three years, boy.”

He stood up, his gaze sharpening on me. “I’m Frank Higgins. Retired county sheriff’s deputy. I knew Barnaby and his owner, Clara Hensley.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. This was too much of a coincidence. “Clara Hensley,” I repeated, my voice barely a whisper. “You know what happened to her?”

Frank Higgins’s face clouded over. He sighed, a heavy sound. “Happened? She vanished, darlin’. Three years ago, August. Went missing right out of Oakridge. Her dog, Barnaby here, went missing right alongside her.”

He looked at Buster again, a strange mix of relief and sorrow on his face. “Never thought I’d see this boy again. We searched for weeks, months. Thought he’d been taken too, or… well, worse.”

“He was found as a stray in a different county,” I explained, trying to keep my voice steady. “I adopted him. His microchip still had Barnaby registered to Clara.”

Frank nodded slowly. “That chip was our only lead for a long time. We thought maybe if Barnaby turned up, Clara would too. But no such luck.”

He paused, looking around the busy waiting room. “This ain’t the place to talk about it, young lady. That was a dark time for Oakridge. A real tragedy.”

He scratched Buster behind the ears one last time. “Good to see you, Barnaby. Good to see you safe.”

I felt a chill despite the warm clinic air. The puzzle pieces were falling into place, but the picture they formed was terrifying. A retired deputy, confirming what I’d pieced together from old records, right here in front of me. This was no longer just a suspicion. It was a concrete, undeniable link.
