My Mentor Sponsored My Tuition Until My Rescue Dog Refused to Eat Near Him — Uncovering the 3-Year Cold Case That Lost Me Everything
Frank Higgins led me to a quiet corner of the clinic lobby, away from the chatter and beeping machines. He lowered his voice, his eyes serious.
“Clara Hensley was a good woman, Maya. Kind, worked at the library, loved her dog more than anything.” He paused, looking directly at me. “Her disappearance tore that town apart.”
“The articles said the case went cold,” I offered, trying to prompt him.
He nodded grimly. “That’s because we never found a body. Or Barnaby. And without either, we couldn’t make anything stick.”
“Make what stick?” I asked, though I already dreaded the answer.
Frank sighed again, running a hand over his face. “Arthur Albright was the primary suspect, Maya. Your Mr. Albright.”
The words hit me like a physical blow, even though I’d suspected it. Hearing it confirmed, out loud, by an official who had investigated the case, was different. My stomach lurched.
“He was dating Clara around the time she vanished,” Frank continued, his voice low. “He was also the last person known to have seen her alive. Said they had a fight, he left her at her house, went back to his own place.”
“But they didn’t have enough evidence?” I clarified.
“His story was solid enough to avoid charges without proof,” Frank explained. “No forced entry, no struggle at her house. Just… she was gone. And so was Barnaby.” He looked down at Buster, who was now resting peacefully at my feet, oblivious to the conversation. “We always believed Barnaby was with her, alive or otherwise.”
Frank leaned closer, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “Arthur Albright is a charming man, Maya. A civic leader, a respected teacher. But he’s also manipulative. He covered his tracks well. And he walks among us, free, while Clara’s family still grieves.”
“You think he…?” I couldn’t bring myself to say the word.
Frank’s eyes met mine, unwavering. “I think he’s a dangerous man, Maya. He fooled a lot of people back then. Don’t let him fool you too.”
He put a hand on my arm, his grip firm. “You having Barnaby now, after all this time… it’s a hell of a coincidence. Be careful. Arthur Albright plays for keeps.”
The warning hung heavy in the air. The man who had been my safety net, my benefactor, was now painted as a calculating, ruthless killer by a retired lawman. I felt a cold dread settle deep in my bones. My entire world, built on Arthur’s generosity, felt like it was crumbling around me.
