The air crackled with a sudden, electrifying tension. Backup arrived within minutes, sirens wailing softly in the distance before cutting off as the cars pulled in. More officers, a forensic technician with a kit, and a photographer.

Detective Lawson didn’t waste a second. He held the blood-stained collar up, comparing it to an image on his phone – an old cold-case file photo I could glimpse.

“Confirmed, Arthur,” Lawson said, his voice flat and authoritative. “Clara Hensley’s engraved initials. And this print matches the initial suspect prints we had on file from the time of her disappearance, now clearer than ever. Preserved in what looks like dried sealant or resin.”

Arthur stood frozen on his porch, his face ghostly pale. The casual triumph was gone, replaced by a primal fear. He looked like a cornered animal.

“I… I don’t know anything about that,” Arthur stammered, his voice weak. “That’s ridiculous. That dog was a stray. That’s not mine.”

“This dog,” Lawson corrected him, gesturing to Buster, who was now calmly sitting by Lily, “is registered as Barnaby, Clara Hensley’s dog. And he was found digging this from under your rose garden wall, a spot you specifically forbade anyone from disturbing.”

Lawson looked around, surveying the scene. “Mr. Albright, you are under arrest for questioning in the disappearance and suspected murder of Clara Hensley.”

Before Arthur could utter another protest, two officers moved swiftly up the porch steps. They seized his arms.

“You can’t do this!” Arthur protested, regaining a sliver of his bluster. “I’m a respected citizen! This is outrageous! A child’s toy! This is all this woman’s unstable fantasy!” He pointed a trembling finger at me.

“The evidence speaks for itself, Mr. Albright,” Lawson replied, as the officers expertly cuffed Arthur’s hands behind his back. The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed in the rainy night.

Arthur was led down his own porch steps, past Lily, past Buster, past me. He stumbled slightly, the rain pouring down on him, washing away his carefully constructed facade. He shot me one last, furious, hateful glare.

“This property is now a crime scene,” Lawson announced, as forensic officers began to cordon off the rose garden with yellow tape. “We will be excavating the garden. Maya, your family will need to vacate the premises immediately.”

My car, already packed with our meager belongings, sat ready. Lily, still clutching the empty tin box, looked up at me, her eyes wide. Buster nudged my hand, then looked back at Arthur being led away to the patrol car.

Arthur was gone. Justice for Clara Hensley, after three years of silence, was finally moving forward. But as I watched the yellow tape go up, sealing off the annex too, I knew what I had lost. My scholarship, my home, my safety net—all gone, just as Arthur had promised.
