Chapter 16: One Year Later

With the lockout thwarted, I wanted to ensure there were no other hidden surprises. I arranged for a full structural inspection of my building, pretending it was routine maintenance. My trusted colleague, Lydia, accompanied me.

We started in the basement, a damp, echoing space filled with the rumble of ancient pipes and the smell of mildew. The concrete floors were uneven, the wiring exposed in places.

“Typical for a building this age,” Lydia remarked, shining her flashlight into a dark corner.

But as we moved deeper, I noticed something off. A section of the wall, where a storage room had always been, looked too new. The concrete patch was a different shade, and the texture was slightly uneven. My engineer’s eye immediately picked up the discrepancies.

“Hold on,” I said, running my hand over the rough surface. “This wall has been altered.”

I pulled out my measuring tape, comparing the current layout to my original building schematics. The storage room was supposed to be a solid eight by twelve feet. Now, it was a much larger, open space.

“They knocked down a non-load-bearing wall,” I muttered, my flashlight beam sweeping across the newly exposed area.

But it wasn’t just a larger storage room. Crude wooden partitions had been hastily erected, forming small, windowless cubicles. Each cubicle had a flimsy cot and a single lightbulb hanging from a bare wire.

“What is this?” Lydia breathed, her voice filled with disbelief.

It was clear. Covenant workers had been here, converting the basement into unregistered, unsafe group dormitories. The air was thick with the faint scent of recent occupation, a few discarded rags, and a child’s worn shoe in one corner.

They weren’t just after my building for collateral. They were using it to house low-income church workers, probably under some guise of “covenant care,” exploiting them while also avoiding city permits and safety inspections. This explained their desperation, their need for complete control. They were running an illegal, unsafe housing operation directly beneath my tenants, putting everyone at risk.
