Chapter 16: One Year Later

The following Tuesday, I was hunched over a bridge schematic when my supervisor, Mr. Henderson, cleared his throat at my cubicle entrance. He was usually jovial, but today his face was pale, his shoulders slumped.

“Clara, could you come to my office?” His voice was strained.

A knot formed in my stomach. I knew what this was about.

In his office, Mr. Henderson gestured to the two empty chairs opposite his desk. Ruth Halloway sat there, regal and unmoving, her hands clasped on her lap. Next to her was Elder Silas Thorne, a grim-faced man I recognized from covenant council meetings.

They looked at me with an air of cold triumph.

“Clara,” Mr. Henderson said, avoiding my gaze. “Mrs. Halloway and Elder Thorne have presented the board with some… serious allegations.”

Ruth fixed me with a stare, her lips a thin line. “Allegations of financial impropriety, Clara. Against church property.”

Elder Thorne slid a thick packet of papers across the desk. I recognized the covenant’s official seal. Notices of pending church litigation, injunctions, and threats of public boycotts.

“The New Dawn Covenant has a significant network of suppliers and clients in this county,” Ruth said, her voice smooth as silk. “If your firm continues to employ someone actively engaged in legal disputes with the church, especially one involving the Supreme Elder’s family… well, we would have no choice but to reconsider our partnerships.”

Mr. Henderson wrung his hands. “Clara, our firm, it’s a small business. We can’t afford this kind of… public relations battle.”

He looked at me with genuine regret. “I need you to step away from active projects for a while. Unpaid leave, effective immediately. Until this is resolved.”

My jaw tightened. They weren’t just attacking me legally; they were trying to dismantle my entire life, my career, the very independence I had built. They wanted to cut off my income, leave me vulnerable. This was a direct, calculated attack on my livelihood, a professional assassination attempt. They thought they could starve me out.
