The cafe was a neutral territory, deliberately chosen outside both the downtown area and the enclave. Ruth Halloway sat across from me, her posture as rigid as ever, but her eyes held a new, desperate glint. Her usual air of superiority was replaced by a barely concealed panic.

“Clara,” she began, her voice low. “This has gone far enough.”

I said nothing, sipping my iced tea.

She slid a folded paper across the table. It wasn’t a legal document this time, but a typed letter on official covenant letterhead.

“This is an eviction notice,” she explained, her voice devoid of emotion. “For five elderly cottage residents living on church-owned land. People who have been with the covenant for decades, who have no other homes, no lease protections.”

My gaze snapped to the paper. The names were unfamiliar, but the implications were clear. Vulnerable, elderly people.

“If you testify against Malachi at the preliminary hearing next week,” she continued, “these notices will be delivered. Their homes will be cleared. Immediately.”

A cold rage flared in my chest. This wasn’t just extortion; it was emotional terrorism. They were using innocent people as pawns, threatening to make them homeless to save Malachi.

“They’re not members of the Halloway family, Ruth,” I said, my voice tight. “They’re innocent.”

“They are dependent on the covenant’s grace,” she countered, her lips pursed. “A grace that can be withdrawn if you persist in this foolishness.”

She leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. “You have a choice, Clara. Your revenge, or their homes. Drop the assault charges. Withdraw your fraud allegations. And this can all go away.”

The weight of her ultimatum pressed down on me. I wanted justice against Malachi, against all of them, but not at the cost of innocent lives. They knew my weakness, my fear of loneliness, my empathy for the vulnerable, something born from my own foster care past. Ruth thought she had found my breaking point.
