Chapter 15: Two Years Later

The air in the ballroom crackled with the raw energy of Julian’s shattered facade. He stood paralyzed, his eyes wide and unseeing, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The revelation of the wire had crushed him.

Bianca, however, found a surge of adrenaline. With a desperate cry, she lunged towards the nearest exit, her yellow dress a blur.

“She’s getting away!” someone shouted.

But Detective Raymond Alvarez, whose imposing frame had been strategically positioned near the ballroom doors since the federal agents arrived, moved with surprising speed. He stepped directly into Bianca’s path, his hand raised, a silent, unyielding barrier.

“Ms. Gable,” he said, his voice calm but firm, “I wouldn’t advise that. You’re already quite implicated.”

Bianca stumbled to a halt, glaring at him, her chest heaving. “Implicated in what? He’s the one! He did everything!”

She pointed a trembling finger at Julian, who still hadn’t moved. The blame, so carefully deflected, was now being hurled back and forth between the co-conspirators.

Detective Alvarez pulled a tablet from his jacket pocket. Its screen glowed with a spreadsheet, rows of numbers, and official logos. He held it out for Bianca to see.

“These are the offshore bank transfers,” Alvarez stated, his gaze unwavering. “Specifically, transfers from ‘Gable Innovations LLC’ to various personal accounts. Accounts in your name, Ms. Gable. Bearing your electronic signature of approval.”

Bianca’s eyes darted to the tablet. She saw the familiar columns, the dates, the amounts. Her breath hitched. The numbers confirmed what I had revealed, the financial thread connecting her directly to the stolen research grants.

“The $1.4 million siphoned from St. Jude’s research budget,” Alvarez continued, “was routed through an account registered to your mother, yes. But the payouts, Ms. Gable, went directly to you. Over the past twelve months, you received a series of deposits totaling approximately $150,000 in your personal accounts.”

Bianca’s face crumpled. The last vestiges of her defiance drained away, replaced by raw terror. She stared at the tablet, then at Julian, a primal scream escaping her lips.

“He promised me $500,000!” she shrieked, her voice echoing through the stunned ballroom. “He said it would be my new start! A position on the board of the merged network! He said once the merger finalized, the rest would come!”

She fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably, her yellow dress pooling around her. Her confession, delivered in a fit of rage and despair, sealed her fate and further condemned Julian. He had dangled half a million dollars in front of her, promising a future that would never materialize, all while funneling her mother’s company and her own signature into his elaborate scheme. Her self-serving panic had revealed the full scope of her direct involvement and Julian’s explicit promises.
