Chapter 15: Two Years Later

Julian’s eyes widened, a flicker of raw panic replacing his previous feigned shock. He looked towards Bianca, a silent plea passing between them. The federal agents, unmoving, watched his every reaction.

“Elena, you… you’re confused,” Julian finally managed, his voice thin, almost reedy. “That’s why I’ve been so worried about you.”

I shook my head slowly, a sad smile playing on my lips. “Worried about me? Or worried about how to make your deception more believable?”

“You spoke to the hospital board, remember?” I challenged him, my voice low but firm. “You told them I was exhibiting ‘symptoms of cognitive decline.’ You even hinted at early onset memory issues, a ‘family history’ you conjured out of thin air.”

Julian’s gaze flickered to Dr. Miller, one of the board members, who now looked deeply uncomfortable.

“You were so persuasive, Julian,” I continued, “so concerned. So much so that you began to ‘help’ me with my daily routines. Offering me water, making sure I took my vitamins.”

A knot formed in my stomach as I remembered his solicitous gestures. The little plastic pill organizer he’d insisted I use, filling it himself each Sunday night. He’d said it was to lighten my burden, to ensure I didn’t miss a dose during my grueling schedule.

“About a month ago,” I recounted, “I was cleaning out my vanity drawer. I found a few old vitamin bottles, tucked behind some cosmetics. My usual brand. But something felt off.”

I paused, letting the memory resurface. The slight difference in the cap, the almost imperceptible variance in the pill size. It was a surgeon’s eye for detail, honed over years of recognizing anomalies.

“I compared them to the supplements you were giving me, Julian. The new ones, in the weekly organizer you meticulously filled.”

The room was so quiet, I could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning. Every guest was leaning forward, captivated by the unraveling drama.

“The labels didn’t match,” I stated, the words cold and precise. “Not quite. The font was off. The expiration dates were… smudged, almost. It was subtle, but I noticed.”

Julian clenched his fists at his sides, his knuckles white. He looked like a cornered animal.

“I didn’t say anything, of course,” I went on. “I just started collecting samples. A few pills from each day’s dose, carefully stored. Then, two weeks ago, I sent them to an independent forensic lab. Under a pseudonym, naturally.”

The shock that registered on his face was palpable. He had believed his actions were undetectable.

“The results came back yesterday,” I revealed, and a collective gasp swept through the ballroom. “The pills you were so kindly administering to me, Julian, were not my standard daily vitamins. They were low-dose sedatives. Potent enough to induce brain fog, disorientation, and memory lapses. Exactly the symptoms you were describing to the hospital board about my ‘declining cognitive function’.”

He stumbled backward, nearly colliding with a waiter carrying a tray of champagne flutes. The waiter managed to steady himself, his eyes wide with disbelief. Julian had tried to poison my mind, quite literally, to shore up his fabricated narrative. The betrayal was a bitter taste in my mouth, but the truth, finally unleashed, was sweeter still.
