Chapter 14: The Echo of Grey Light

The deposition room felt stark, cold. Marcus arrived with an air of practiced arrogance, his expensive suit perfectly tailored, a small smirk playing on his lips. He believed his high-priced attorney, a man named Sterling Vance, would stall the proceedings indefinitely, drowning us in legal maneuvers.

Judge Rosalyn Carver, however, was not known for her patience. Her gaze, sharp and unyielding, swept over the room.

“Mr. Delaney,” she began, her voice crisp. “We are here to address the missing corporate funds and alleged illegal asset transfers from Apex Maritime Group. Do you have a statement?”

Marcus leaned back in his chair. “Your Honor, this is a baseless attempt by my ex-wife to destabilize a thriving company out of spite. My attorney will address all these frivolous accusations.”

Sterling Vance began to speak, citing procedural issues and demanding more discovery time. He droned on about legal precedents and technicalities, clearly aiming to delay any actual testimony.

Judge Carver held up a hand, stopping him mid-sentence. “Mr. Vance, I appreciate your zeal. However, given the compelling evidence presented by the state prosecutor’s office, and the flight risk demonstrated by your client’s documented attempts to transfer significant capital overseas, I’m afraid we’re past the preliminary stalling tactics.”

Marcus shifted uncomfortably. His smirk faltered.

“Furthermore,” Judge Carver continued, “given the ongoing criminal investigation into wire fraud and grand larceny, and the substantial risk of further asset concealment, the court has deemed it necessary to act decisively.”

She picked up a document, her eyes scanning it. My heart hammered in my chest.

“Effective immediately,” she announced, her voice echoing in the silent room, “this court issues an emergency injunction freezing all personal assets belonging to Marcus Delaney. All bank accounts, property deeds, and investment portfolios are hereby placed under a temporary hold.”

Marcus gasped, a small, choked sound. His face went white. Sterling Vance stared at the judge, then at Marcus, a look of profound shock on his face.

“This includes, Mr. Vance,” Judge Carver added, “any funds currently held in retainer for legal services rendered by your firm on behalf of Mr. Delaney.”

The silence that followed was absolute. Marcus, his mouth hanging slightly open, looked utterly deflated. He couldn’t pay his lawyer. His high-priced defense, the one he believed would protect him, had just been rendered useless. The trap had sprung, not with a bang, but with the quiet click of a judge’s pen. His arrogance had been his undoing.
