Chapter 14: The Echo of Grey Light

The conference room was dark, save for the glow of the projection screen where Arthur Pendelton, the forensic tax attorney, was sifting through Apex Maritime’s quarterly filings. It was late, the city outside a quiet hum.

“Impressive acquisition, Evelyn,” Arthur said, adjusting his glasses. “The SEC filing was airtight. Marcus really walked into a trap of his own making.”

“He didn’t know I was capable of rebuilding,” I replied, running a hand through my hair. “He just saw the bankruptcy, the failure.”

Arthur scrolled through pages of financial data, his expression unreadable. “Well, he might have been planning a second act of ruin for you, even before your grand entrance.”

He clicked to a new slide, displaying a corporate registration document. “I found something… odd. A new subsidiary. Filed six months ago, under a Delaware holding company.”

My eyes scanned the document. My breath caught in my throat.

The name on the registration was “Evelyn’s Ventures LLC.”

My old business. The one that had gone bankrupt two years ago, taking everything I owned with it. The name was still a raw wound.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered. “That company was dissolved. Every asset liquidated.”

Arthur shook his head. “Not exactly. Marcus seems to have resurrected it. Or, rather, used the corporate name. He registered this new ‘Evelyn’s Ventures LLC’ and then immediately diverted several significant liabilities into it.”

He pointed to a line item: “Apex Maritime Group, a wholly owned subsidiary, ‘Evelyn’s Ventures LLC,’ reported a net loss of $780,000 in Q3 due to ‘unforeseen market fluctuations’ and ‘onerous contractual obligations.'”

My old business name, now a ghost company. Marcus hadn’t just used the name. He was actively funneling Apex Maritime’s bad debts, their illicit transactions, into a shell company that legally mimicked my prior failed venture.

“He’s shifting his bad debts onto *my* personal credit history,” I said, the realization dawning on me with sickening clarity. “He’s creating a paper trail to make it look like *I’m* still defaulting on my previous failures.”

Arthur nodded grimly. “Exactly. If anyone ever looked into the financial records of this new ‘Evelyn’s Ventures LLC,’ they’d see heavy losses, questionable transfers. And the name would immediately link back to you. It’s a smoke screen. A way to throw regulators off *his* scent by making it look like *your* past business failures were simply continuing.”

He stared at the screen, then at me. “This isn’t just unethical, Evelyn. This is outright fraud. Intentionally misleading financial markets and potentially implicating you in future liabilities.”

My jaw tightened. This wasn’t just about money or power. It was about Marcus trying to destroy my reputation, my future, even after he left me. He wanted to make sure I would never truly escape the shadow of my past.

“Arthur,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. “Draft an immediate complaint. For the state prosecutor’s office. This stops now.”
