Chapter 14: The Echo of Grey Light

Judge Carver’s gavel cracked, a sharp, final sound. “Given the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, repeated attempts to obstruct justice, and a demonstrated pattern of asset concealment,” she announced, her voice firm, “this court finds Marcus Delaney to be an immediate flight risk and a danger to the integrity of ongoing investigations.”

Marcus looked up, his face a mixture of shock and outrage.

“Bail is hereby denied,” the Judge declared. “Remand to state custody immediately.”

Marcus sprang to his feet, protesting loudly, but his public defender gently pulled him back down. The gavel struck again.

As the court adjourned, Marcus was led out of the courtroom by a bailiff. I stood and watched him go. The hallway was crowded with reporters, their cameras flashing like strobe lights.

Detective Raymond Walsh stepped forward, his uniform crisp, his expression unreadable. He held up a pair of handcuffs.

“Marcus Delaney,” Detective Walsh stated, his voice clear and resonant amidst the din. “You are under formal arrest for multiple counts of grand larceny, wire fraud, and tax evasion.”

Marcus struggled, trying to pull away, but the detective was strong. The cold click of the handcuffs echoed in the crowded hallway. Reporters surged forward, shouting questions.

As Marcus was led away, his eyes, wild with rage and desperation, locked onto mine. He looked at me, truly *saw* me, for the first time in years.

“You’re nothing, Evelyn!” he screamed, his voice hoarse, strained. “You hear me? You’ll always just be a bankrupt nobody without me! You’re nothing!”

The words, meant to wound, simply faded into the chaos around us. They were empty. He was the one being led away in cuffs, stripped of everything.

As Marcus disappeared down the hall, two more uniformed officers approached Chloe Albright, who stood frozen near the exit. One of them handed her a document.

“Ms. Albright,” he said politely, “you are hereby served with a mandatory deposition subpoena concerning your involvement with Coastal Holdings LLC. Your full cooperation is required.”

Chloe gasped, staring at the paper. Her eyes flickered to the empty space where Marcus had just been. Her face was pale, utterly defeated. She had been so sure she was playing the game, only to discover she was merely a pawn in his biggest deception. The consequences of her choices, and Marcus’s betrayal, were only just beginning for her.
